Reconnaissance...

How paranoid do we need to be about taking land hexes? Do these beach hexes to the east of SNLF generate allied recon if not taken?

I would not worry about it in the first few turns...BUT would take them to be sure and clean up.

Honestly they should just "fall" given enough time but I am not sure that happens in the game.

Has to be in supply.

I must be getting to old for this... what does this answer mean???

Could a few more words be spent on context?

It would mean that for recon to be effective the hex must be in supply

Therefore...those hexes are NOT in supply so should provide NO data to the Allies.

Easy to validate in Hotseat play...

If must be in supply something seems off

Alvaro,

This screen shot would differ from your explanation.

That hex is out of supply but still says the UK have Very High Recon.

Perhaps the wording is wrong? Not sure how I would test that though.

But clearly all the hexes out of supply still owned by the UK say that the UK has Very High Recon

Hovering over a Japanese-owned hex would probably give you more what I'm asking [:D], i.e., whether recon is propagated from non-supplied hexes.

I think what he means is look at the hexes. If the enemy lands there where are they getting their supply from? They either need a port or a fleet of shore to give them supply. Without supply you can move units in and pick them off easily.

Protect your ports.

And if the enemy is able to park a large fleet off your shore and provide beach supply, you have bigger problems then whether you need to take those hexes.

I misspoke.

Let me explain. I will also make sure the manual has it correct. I think it does but I'll check anyways.

Any land/coastal hex controlled by a player generates recon. Beaches do not.

So basically any hex a land unit can MOVE into generates recon
A hex that they can't MOVE into does not. Beaches need to be landed on.

Ok it is told in the manual exactly what generates recon but it is very likely players will miss it. So I added a new table to the manual and will be updating it today.

Okay SO you would need to "take" every hex to prevent recon. I will test that with the beach.

I made sure to search plenty before bothering this time [:D]

The manual says "High reconnaissance levels are present near a country’s territory and drop off as the player gets farther from the country’s controlled land," which isn't very clear, to be honest. If one british half beach hex in Borneo is spotting the IJN until 1945, for example, this would be a strange gameplay nuance with a major effect but very little feedback that it's happened, given recon is on the enemy turn.

Well I validated...beaches do not appear to provide any recon as Al stated...

At least not in the hotseat mode I tested with.

BUT not all the hexes shown are beaches...one is a jungle. THAT hex will cause the UK to get recon. So you do need to take that.

If you can move a land unit with normal movement yes. But those hexes do eventually convert anyways due to supply converting control from unsupplied hexes.

How many turns to make hex convert due to unsupplied hexes ? In my PBEM, somes places in Borneo are unsupplied for 6 months but still UK.

It might be out of the Japanese supply range. To convert a hex you need a supplied hex next to it.

Basically if the Japanese don't enter a jungle to supply it some rebels still might be there.

Thanks Alvaro, get the idea. Maybe West of Rabaul is out of supply. But it's strange, it's a 3 hex island. I'll check next turn.

(And yes, allies probably have a high recon on Rabaul for 6 months.. I'm such an idiot. ^^)
