Is there any combat benefit to recon mission?

It is obviously good to know exactly how many enemy troops are in a hex, but would it impact combat in any way?

Yes, your odds of achieving hits are higher if you have max recon, rather than 100 only. Checkout the manual for further info.

"Hidden Defenders modifier
If you have low Recon on the Hex you are attacking, the Hitpoints of some of the Subunits defending the Hex can be multiplied by up to 3 times. Keep in mind however during the battle you’ll quickly gain more Recon points."
