How do you allow AI to take over a country?
I have not been able to discover the proper way

When you start a game you will presented with a box asking you to choose sides. On the side you chose you can then select which nations in that alliance which will be under AI control.

This isn't working for me. I'm trying to start (my very first) game with axis and letting the AI control Japan. The blue circle is around Japan, yet it gives me control over the Japan units. I've played some turns while trying to switch Japan on and off; I've tried switching to control of only Poland and this works but if I switch back to Germany/Italy then I get control of Japan too. Just bought the GOG version.
I'm worried that I set something weird in the options but I can't find anything that would help.

You can still twiddle them if you wish during your turn, but when you hit end turn Japan's AI will start doing its own thang.
