Probably missing something but the Japanese have 6 CVL and they beat 6 US (mainly CV) almost every time and will probably lose this playthrough as I cannot sink the invincible Jap fleet.

Any tips gratefully received for next time

What is the current advancement level of the Japanese CVs compared to the US? Example: CVs upgraded to 1943 tech are going to do well against those with 1942.

Playing either side, if an advancement is available, you need to upgrade immediately.

Hoping for a Midway type of victory is a long shot in the game, as it was historically.

My carriers are 1943 not sure how I can see what the Japanese are. Anyway the British Pacific Fleet has turned up to bolster my battered carrier forces, Still cannot see why so many bases have yellow exclamation mark on them when no enemy naval forces nearby

Are you playing the base scenario or a mod?

I now my mod has a lot of port restrictions.

No mods - just seems like so many bases are restricted but cannot understand why. If enemy TF was nearby then fine makes sense. So much to understand on this game - perhaps next time I will know better what to do and will look out for any player tips that get published

Yellow exclamation marks just mean that the port is supplying more units than it has capacity for. Unless you're getting "xxxx unit is in basic supply" reports though, everybody is still getting some supply and replacements, some counters will just be recovering efficiency more slowly. It's not something to worry about, just consider rotating a unit out to a big port or back to main supply if it's very low on efficiency and being supplied by an exclamation mark port.

Odds are it is the Chinese ports...that happens if you send some of the armies there from Japan.

PBEM or against AI? Does the battle occur on your turn or on the Japanese turn?

It is against AI and happens whoever initiates combat. Anyway pressing on and Royal Navy CV have finally tipped the scales in Allies favour in the sea war.

Sounds like bad luck. Only thing that can be done is to try to engage with land-based air first, and maybe subs, etc.

What version of the game are you playing?
Early versions had a bug in the AI that allowed it to use more than six carriers in a stack giving it a definite edge. Especially in mixed group of CV's and CVL's. AI usually kept all its carriers together in huge stacks while Allies could only have six total.

Screenshot showing the combat results would help to determine cause as well.

It's also possible their carrier advancement outranges you. Not sure if that prevents retaliation.
