Unexpected surrender

Is this supposed to be possible? I honestly don't know.

A strong tank corps in supply with a retreat path surrenders to a 4to1 attack.

It should have shattered, not surrendered. Strange.

I believe there is a chance that a unit will surrender rather than shatter.

No idea of the odds but it is low. I have seen this but it is pretty rare.

4 units surrender in one turn. I'll lose the war like this.

Alvaro could you check the algorithm for retreat or surrender, something is wrong, happens in this area just west of Vitebsk.

(Or I suppose this technically COULD happen but what are the odds?)

Next turn, more of the same. Soviet units keep surrendering on low odds attacks. Combats in other areas are normal.

Are retreat paths checked properly for surrender?

The really odd thing here is that it is only happening to Soviet units. It should at least be consistent on both sides, with surrenders occurring all over.

Anyways, yeah, pretty broken.

Only situation where a unit surrenders like this...

#1 no retreat path in 2 hex range to an empty hex
#2 can't trace to a supply source

The image looks like he should have shattered.

Is this an A.I. attack or human attack?

BTW sometimes I miss a post because it is not bolded and considered "read".

Fridays are my WPP/WPE days.
Monday - Thursday are my WP2 days.

I only play online PBEM games, so not against an AI.

There was no empty hex (full of other Soviet units) within 2 hexes, but still shouldn't they have shattered? They were all units in high supply and full/almost full strength.
Surrender is a bit extreme.

That is the way it should be Alvaro, that a unit should only surrender if both of those conditions exist. But as you can see from Sveint's screenshots above sometimes units surrender even if they have a supply path. I posted on this bug already in the tech forum over a month ago here https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5046033

In that same thread Nirosi also gave some examples. Not sure why this is happening but it is and it would be nice to have it resolved. The problem I suppose is that it is not reproducable. Sometimes it works like it should and sometimes it doesn't.

Alvaro, will you be looking at this bug?

Here is another example of a unit surrendering when it should have shattered. Alvaro will you be looking at this, or is it just too difficult to find this bug?

I looked at the code and I can't find where it botches. But I will be looking harder this Friday.

Please also verify that unit name didn't actually shatter and just the text is incorrect.

Weird...we are not having any of that in our game.
I don't think there were many USSR surrenders other than surrounded units.
Then again I think there were only 1 or 2 shattered

It seems to only happen sporadically. Maybe 1 in 5 or so "Shatters" are mistakenly turned into "Surrenders." The situation only arises when the Attacked Unit has no valid retreat hex. This generally only occurs when either:

1. Other units have been retreated into hexes behind the "Attacked Unit" or,
2. The Attacked Unit is at the spearhead of a thrust into enemy territory.

If you look at my mirror game with MM I did "Shatter" two Russian Armies last turn because I had retreated other Russian units into the only hexes they could retreat too. So the fact they Shattered rather than Surrendered, shows that it does work most of the time. Just my bad luck that it didn't work for my Tank Corps.

I am 99% sure that it was not placed into my Deployment Queue. But I will verify on my next turn.
