All,

Thinking about picking up AE again after a long absence. Previously played through both stock and one of the mods (Extended map, Ironman(?)) over the course of several years. Would definitely like a extended map mod with a challenging AI opponent. And a pony, but hey, who's counting....

Which of the myriad new mods offers a strong AI, realistic logistical challenges, and some level of historical accuracy?

Check the Scenario area where there are new Scenario 1 and 2 AIs along with some new Ironman scenarios.

Instead of a pony, I would rather have something else . . .

Well, "historical accuracy" isn't really an option for the IJ side if you want it to be interesting. I'd recommend one of Andy Mac's Ironman mods over at the Mod subforum. "Ironman Insanity T3" is the toughest if I'm not mistaken. The IJN gets plenty of additional hardware and there are a couple of surprises I wouldn't want to spoil.
