As we are inching closer to our hands-off date handing out the game code to Matrix Games, here's a little thread to make the wait a bit shorter perhaps.
How long's the wait, exactly? We don't have the exact date yet, and with Matrix announcing plenty of games in October, we are keeping our fingers crossed for November.

Hand off to Matrix is the end of October to be released in November (ideally)
There will be a series of blogs available, I for one are writing two of them
[*] Campaign Series Event Engine in Vietnam 1.0, and
[*] Wars and battles covered in Vietnam 1948-1967
To start off, here's the first Campaign Series Event Engine (CSEE) Developer Diary out:

Thanks! It is quite astonishing what first Berto has been able to put together in programming this all, and then how the scenario designers and CSEE programmers / CSEE scriptures have gone and have the battles come out with it all.
This first diary was just touching the surface, though. I will go into more depth when writing about the Scripted AI opponent. And while "scripted opponent" might sound like an AI that repeats itself through the hard coded restraints, it is not like that at all here.
Especially the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War scenarios should turn out to be a cunning and devious opponent, with how they fought the often asymmetrical war.

Hi Randy, good to see you back here!
Lot of good stuff happening with Campaign Series Vietnam.
Here is a parting shot of a scenario I just tested in the game. It has the Viet Minh going against French positions along route 10 southeast of Ninh Binh.

I am writing another article on the game content, starting with the French Indochina War and how's that to be covered in Vietnam 1.0. Hopefully out this weekend.

Here's then the first Developer Diary covering the content available with Vietnam 1.0. We are still working with a BETA here, but bearing that in mind this should not be too far off as what's there in the game as it releases.
The French Indochina War in Vietnam 1.0 (directs to CSLegion.com)
From a company sized jump to
Giong Dingh in 1948, to the
Street Without Joy and a huge Complexity 8 scenario covering Operation Camargue, one of the largest use of forces by France in the conflict (and quite a map too, see below!), it is all
*) there.
There's also a deeper cover of some key campaigns, such as
the Day River campaign in spring 1951 with five scenarios, and
the Hoa Binh campaign of Autumn 1951 with two scenarios, too.
Dien Bien Phu? A whopping ten-series scenario set.
*) There's the full set of editors available to fill any gap small or large should you miss your favorite skirmish with 1.0.

...and a huge Complexity 8 scenario covering Operation Camargue, ....
Does it model the 'melting away' process that the VM forces often employed to evade serious engagements?

This depends on the scenario. In some cases yes, in other cases the scenario ends before the VM/VC leave the battlefield

I am ever-so-slightly disappointed that you didn't push the timeline to 1973, considering how long we have waited. [;)]
Equipment-wise, 1973 vs. 1967 is probably semantics anyway, but still a bit surprised on the heavy focus on the French, as most people today don't even recognize U.S. involvement, no less the old stuff.
Anyway, glad it is coming soon, and thanks!

That's just it.
The scenario development, especially the scripting, would take another couple few years for the 1968-1979 scenarios.
We all agreed internally to get something out sooner rather than later for you all to play.
Also note, there are over 100 scenarios included with the game, with ample American involvement scenarios from 1965-1967.

Just to illustrate yet again how different we wargamers are I think I am most looking forward to playing the French Indo China "End of Empire" scenarios. It is nice to see such a conflict portrayed and an era very rarely tackled.

Approximately half of the scenarios included in the 1.0 release cover the US involvement, then French Indochina and Vietnamese Civil war approx a quarter each. Then the tournament scenarios depicting a hypothetical US-China situation to add to those.
And the editors are there of course, so hopefully enough content to keep everyone busy for a while!

Even those of us that "recognize U.S. involvement" will learn something new while enjoying the game. I wish more wargame developers focused on lesser known conflicts.

Initially, I did feel cheated out of Tet '68, but that is a huge logistical load for the scenario designers, which I now understand.
And yes, I need to consider the large French Indochina scenarios as a great learning experience. In fact, it may be the best part of the initial release, as I assume many of the scenarios involving the U.S. will be "hit or miss" inconclusive engagements.
Anyway, I am always delighted to be proved wrong and anxiously await the upcoming release.
