Windows 10

I bought this years ago but never really played it. I have re-installed it and updated to the latest version at the suggestion of an old friend who is a big fan and wants to play.

I am trying to run it on my new windows 10 PC with a 3840x2160 screen and can't get past the start up screen. I get a stretched elongated verion of the game start screen until it blacks out and then nothing.

I have tried running it in windowed mode, I even imported it to Steam, set the start resolution at 1024x768 and tried running it there. Always the same result.

Any suggestions?

Regards
Andrew

Simovich is better qualified than I am to answer this, but I do believe if you try running it in window mode through dxwnd, it should work. If nothing else I do know that you have to use dxwnd to run the game on the latest electronic wonder boxes. It should be part of the download.

Got Dxwnd running and tried running the dxw file that comes with the game. After sorting out the file location, ended up getting the same result! Have been on a Mac for 8 years so this is all a bit foreign to me now. I think I need some help

So a bit more investigation. I can run it in a window on Dxwnd if I don't use the supplied dxw file. Its is pretty slow and laggy though. Must be a better way.

No no don't do this. Dxwnd is only for running the game full screen without the lag you get with W10.

If it still lags in window mode and with ddraw software emulation it sounds to me like a dpi setting on your monitor. I can look into this but it might be a day or 2.

Have you tried running the game as administrator? right click btr.exe and set compatibility to windows 8 and run as administrator.

What happens when you run the game through dxwnd using the provided settings and specific version of dxwnd?

Thanks for the help.

I actually still can’t get it to run in full screen mode at all. It freezes at a stretched and incomplete view of the start screen which is actually quite difficult to get out of. Switching to Task Manager is hard as the computer kinda just freezes on that screen. Running the app as is, or in full screen mode in Dxwnd seems to give the same result.

I am remembering why I want Mac a few years back!

Cheers
Andrew

Ran as administrator. Used the attached Dxwnd profile. All same result.

I think I fixed it. When I dived into properties and set the DPI scaling to be set by the app, hey presto it worked. Thanks for the suggestion to look at DPI settings.

I got the same problem. Tried a variety of settings, but no love. Oh well, it only cost ten bucks. I would love to be able to play this game, though, if anybody is still around who can help. I got the dxwnd program and tried to run it through that, I tried the launcher, I tried launching the .exe directly, ran as an administrator, messed with various dpi settings without really understanding what I was doing, and in general nothing worked. Just went to that startup screen, which I could see about 1/3 of .

DrK,

I remember you from the old days. I set this up the other day. I first tried just WIN10 compatibility and software mode. But I was getting bleed through switch in and out. (The speed boost on DXWND and software mode are more less equal on modern hardware.)

Also, running in a Window sucks big time due to the size.

DXWND is the way to go. I had it running full screen, but I decide for Window full screen draw space on display 2. On this capture, it looks small as pixels are absolute. But I have it windowed using full area to draw on display 2. The video card interpolates very nicely from 1024x768 -> 1600x1200 on a 21" display; while the primary is 32" 1080p.

You can PM me (as I need an email to white list). This is only my second post on Matrix in a year. Hopefully the last. I don't help (as in a beta sense), but if it is someone I know, that is a different story.
