OT: Fond PC Game Memory....

Anyone (probably one of us "older" gents) remember the game "Balance of Power: Eagle against the Bear" ? It was a global politics sim where the player took the side of either the US or the USSR and the goal was to gain the most prestige points without setting off a nuclear war.

I was cleaning out one of my closets and came across the instruction manual (the large 5.25 disks have long since vanished unfortunately) and thought to myself..."Wow that was a cool game for something designed in 1985 or there abouts."

A quick look up on google shows that it was never transferred to 3.5 and hasn't been in print for some time now. Maybe Matrix could revamp that puppy too?!?!?!? I know I'd buy it!

Ahhh yes. Oh well, just felt like sharing that stroll down memory lane.

Yeah I think everyone has at least one game that they remember as having been "cool" at the time.

My first wargame for the computer was Patton Strikes Back. It came on 5.25 and 3.5 I think.
The map was "clearly awesome" well at the time it was :) I liked how it featured movement that seemed very cool. The units were all just arrowheads, one colour for each side.

I still have the software and the manual, although numerous games do the same thing and a bit easier to run. But I probably will keep the game just because it was my first computer wargame.

Yeah,I too liked "Patton strikes back"(because I love eye candy and built in videos).,but the interface was lousy!..You literally had to drag each of your divisions(arrows) around right to the intended position, and if your mouse slipped at all,you had to go back to the beginning all over again.
And remember the clown in the helmet telling you how the weather was gonna be??..
I liked an old B-17 game for the Atari 800 called "50 mission crush"....I thought it was way neater than Micropose's later "B-17",(which I never could get to work right. And half that turkey was spent taxiing!(no fun in that)..
Maybe someday Matrix can put together some more "beer and pretzel" turn-based aviation games, that don't require a lot of time/thought,but are just fun to play???:)

cool game

Yo,
Eagle and the Bear was a great game of brinkmanship. You used assassination, revolution, etc to outmaneuver the Soviet Union(or play the Commies against US) and you balanced your replies with theirs. Object as you said was to avoid nuclear confrontation. My buddy and I played this game quite a bit when we were 12 or 13. Every game usually ended up a nuclear war, though! I think the computer liked to lose less than the one from that Wargames movie, which was what the game really reminded me of while playing! I work with my buddy's Dad, and he said that computer with Eagle and the Bear, Lost Admiral and seveal other oldies but goodies games is with the Grandfather in Florida.
Thanks for the memory....

Hmmm.. my first wargame must have been.. The Perfect General. At the time it kicked major @ss. I clearly remember I whooped all my friends behinds, when they tried playing me. I was a loner when it came to wargaming and most games were played against the (seemingly brainless) AI. I believe I have the entire game somewhere, with box & manual, on 3.5 inch disk(s?). I never got round to buying the expansions unfortunately.

After that a large wargameless gap came, and then the Battleground serieus and Eastern Front I. Ahhhhh.. fond memories of times past.. :D

Two of my all-time favorites were SSI's "Mech Brigade" for the C-64 (what I wouldn't give to have a few TOW's in SP:WAW!) and "Harpoon" which I had in the "classic" edition on (IIRC) 14 5.25 floppies for the PC (my old 386-40 DX) Matrix, having a business relationship with SSI, might want to consider a reissue (and slight revamping) of "Mech Brigade" one day. And, I know one of the programmers working on a new version of "Harpoon" The release date on that has been constantly pushed back the past few years, but my buddy tells me it's still "in the works" and not abandoned.
