Novice help with SU auto allocation

Trying Red Army Resurgent, as the Soviet side and I want to completely automate SU allocation. I notice that all HQs start with an SU level of 3. My question is, if anyone is kind enough to know the answer - does the 5 hex rule apply to ALL HQs? That is, if you want SUs from an HQ to be possibly allocated to a CU for a combat, must the HQ always be within 5 hexes range of that CU? Or does this not apply to higher HQs? Or, can the 5 hexes form a kind of chain? So that, for example, if an individual CU is 5 hexes from its Corps HQ, then it will be able to draw on SUs from that Corps HQ, no problem - but if that Corps HQ is within 5 hexes of the Front HQ, will that front line CU also be able to draw SU support from the SUs held at the Front HQ, even though the individual CU itself is further than 5 hexes from the Front HQ? It's 5 hexes from its Corps HQ, and that Corps is within 5 hexes of the Front HQ, but it's, say, 10 hexes from Front HQ to individual CU.
If the answer is, yes, CU's can only draw support from HQs directly 5 hexes from them, regardless of HQ, then should I be setting the Front HQ support levels, in the above example, to '0'?
Many thanks.

I am no expert, but I believe 5 hexes applies for all HQs.
If you want to totally automate. This is what I understand. The top HQ like OKW is infinite like 999. I think is hardwired into the game or data.
(1) Set OKW=9.
(2) Set all but OKW (all)=0.
(3) Run a turn. This forces all up to OKW. NOTE: There are hardcoded rules I believe for engineer and road/rail construction.
(4) Set a non-corps=1. I know the manual seems to imply that 0 will work, but in my experience it never did. Not set your corps relative to what you thing important will be: 1, 2, 3, 4 ... from testing it seems setting everyone to 3 or 4 will exhaust SUs. So, I think some maybe 1/3 at 4 and 2/3 at 2 might make a good balance. After that, your SU's should flow through the tree naturally.
(5) By turn 3, it should be up and running.
*** Although automatic this may not be optimal. I found loading my ASHQ's corps with arty and locking them really boosted their lethality.
Again it is a question between how much you wish to micro and how much patience you have.

Thanks. But what I'm really curious about is whether SUs will flow down the line - for example, from Front to Corps to CU engaged in battle - even if the Front HQ is further than 5 hexes away (when the Corps HQ is within 5 hexes)? I know the immediate HQ (the Corps) holding and distributing SUs must be within 5 hexes of the engaged CU - but will SUs flow down the line to that Corps HQ from its higher HQs (Army and above) if those higher HQs are further than 5 hexes distant? So in your example above, Markshot, in order for the CUs to get the SUs from Army Hqs, for example (which would be set at '1', as you suggest) does the Army HQ have to be within 5 hexes of the Corps HQ that the SUs will flow through to get to the CU (or, worse, 5 hexes from the CU itself)?

two key bits. Units only
claim combat SU from the immediate controlling HQ. They can draw down construction SU along the chain (rarely needed but it can happen).
The good thing is the routine knows this so will tend to send the combat SUs down the chain to (in your case) the army level.
So you want your Fronts at say 1, then SU will pass up/down the command chain through them and set the army level HQs at 1-9.
Remember that the system will try to give each HQ a balance of SU, so artillery, AA, AT, armour etc, so the values are the number of each of the main types not the total number of SU.
So a '1' means that army has one of each of these types (assuming they are available), a '7' means it tries to get 7 of each type (so it can end up with an awful lot).
If a SU becomes unready due to combat losses, the system will return up to Stavka.
If you don't want a HQ to have any combat SUs then either 'lock' it (so nothing can move in, out or through) or set it to 0. At 0 all it will pick up is a few construction type units.
21.5.6 covers this, so maybe worth a glance
(edit for typo)

Thanks Loki. I read 21.5.6, yes. But, as above - does the 5 hexes rule ONLY apply to the passage of SUs from the immediate controlling HQ to the engaged combat unit? So, say the immediate controlling HQ is a Corps. I set its support level to 3, say and keep it within 5 hexes of the target CU. Above it is a Front HQ. Above that STAVKA. I set Stavka to - what? - '0'? - and the Front HQ to '1'. SUs will then flow down from STAVKA and the Front HQ to the Corps HQ, right? BUT - will this happen even if the Front HQ in that example is more than 5 hexes from the Corps HQ?

As I understand it 5 and immediate command applies to combat loan outs.
The in command number of hexes applies to administrative transfer not in the heat of combat.
0 seems to allow movement up only; > 0 movement both ways; locked frozen.
But there are special SUs and rules for SUs of HQs leaving theater which I think over ride locking.

yes, as in my answer, in combat a unit can only claim SU from its immediate controlling HQ.
So don't muddy up the relatively simple rules for allocation of SU into combat with the more complex routines for the distribution of SU.
In the main you want your SU at the lowest possible level, if you are doing stuff manually it helps to keep some stuff higher up so you allocate it to need (this tends to be odd stuff like very heavy artillery etc)

Great. Thanks, Loki.
