How is the performance in windows 10 currently? I know last year it needed the DXWnd. Is that still required to have the game run decently?

Would it be a lot of work to make the game run better in Win10 without using DXWnd(never tried it)? The game was originally written for what OS?
PS: Sorry for asking about the obvious. I think it would be really nice if this game would work properly in Win10 and at 4K (3840x2160) resolution.
Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,
I'm not savvy enough to accomplish what you speak of, but I think if the programming group from WITP_AE took it on we could see a lot of improvements to performance and graphics. That said, WITP-AE still requires fiddling with switches on the desktop shortcut to work properly, which is only slightly better than DxWnd IMHO. The performance was fine until W10 was released.

Hi simovitch,
First of thank you for getting back to me and Happy New Year 2022! Graphics wise I think the game is fine, from my point of view. Though it would be nice, if to properly supported 4K resolution and make it run better on Win10. It would be even better if Garry could update this game and make it more up to date; sorry I know I'm dreaming.

I do not use DWX.
In the settings I have added the following switches -w -dd_sw
and changed the compability settings for the game to execute in Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) mode.
If there are screen flickering issues, check the screen resolution and change to recommended settings.
I run the game on an Windows 11 Pro Laptop

This is what worked for me -- DxWnd was not working for me in Windows 11, but these settings (create a shortcut to btr.exe, add the switches at the end of the Target path after the quotation marks, set the compatibility) work fantastically well.
Thanks for posting this!

Just for reference. This is the latest unofficial patch just released, but it works just the same on the one a few years ago.
This is WITP-AE (map and some text) at the original 1024x768.
ARGS=-SingleCpuOrders -cpu4 -fd -deepColor -noFire -altFont -skipVideo -fixedArt -archive -dd_sw

This is WITP-AE (map and some text) at 1080p.

I did this on a 32" 1080p TV, both were full screen. 1024x768 was letter box.
(1) The map was designed for 4:3 aspect. Thus, despite getting end to end map at 1080p, you get a lot of additional display East and West and almost nothing North and South. A game that was native 19:16 would probably have drawn the map different.
(2) The text is viewable on a 32" display, but I consider it to be tiresome. But, of course, this is personal perception and eye fitness matter. Only the map is adjusted for the new resolution. So, you don't gain more information despite the smaller text and large display.
(3) The switches are no big deal. It only takes putting the resolution. There is also a SeaBee Utility which will launch or build a short cut for you.
(4) But if EDBTR's text shrinks, then I prefer 1024x768 interpolated by my GPU.
