I tried to send a battleship sized TF to base at Rangoon, now that I have taken it. However, I get a warning that I cannot send the ships upriver to Rangoon.
I accept that there are some limitations on riverine traffic. What I cannot seem to find is the upper limit on ships going to Rangoon!
My admittedly poor search skills on the forum all seem to find entries about supply and other matters but nothing on the Rangoon riverine limitations. I have looked at the manual but again cannot find anything there.
There is some mention on the forum about small and medium sized ships being able to use the river to Rangoon but I have not been able to find any definition of what constitutes a large, a medium or a small ship.
Can anyone offer a link or a manual reference to what is meant by a medium sized ship? Alternatively, what is the upper limit to sending ships to Rangoon?

IIRC the limit is a displacement of 15.000 tons.

4.2.1.4 NAVIGABLE RIVERS
Navigable rivers are rivers that ships may “sail” along. In map terms, they are river hexsides that naval TFs can move across. Navigable rivers have the following effects and limitations:

» Only ships with tonnages of 15,000 tons or less may cross navigable river hexsides.
» The hexsides have effects on naval units that are similar to narrow straits – TFs crossing them are more vulnerable to mines and any CD units that are present.
» TFs will not react along a river unless the range to the enemy is one hex.

The distinction between small, medium and large ships is not something you
really need to know in the game because it is an adjusted factor depending on
how the game designers define it under different situations.

It really goes Warship, Auxiliary, Commercial for the game.

it was necessary to define certain “adjustments” to a uniform tonnage value.
Obviously, one size does not fit all, nor can it given the requirements of the game code.

Warship tonnage is based on listed “standard’ tonnage, with arithmetic adjustments to account for ‘actual trial’ tonnage.

Auxiliary tonnages are based on the parameters defined by “US Navy Light”, with arithmetic adjustments to
account for external factors, such as Port docking, repair/upgrade/conversion shipyard requirements,
economic cost constraints .. etc.

Commercial tonnages are based on the parameters defined by “Lloyds/USMC Light”, with arithmetic adjustments

You can see if a ship will go up a river using that method.
Form up a task force (one battleship or other) anywhere on the map and give
it a destination to a port or up-river hex and if you see a travel path it can go there.

Always search the manual first and then search the forum.

You can copy the game manual PDF version onto your desktop.
There are a number of free programs that read PDF’s.

You want to click on edit, or you can use the hot key “Ctrl+F”
In the dropdown click on Find and it will launch a search
Box in the upper right corner.

You want to type in words that relate to the information you want to find.
In this case words like “Navigable” or “river” are useful.

Thanks guys for that. Don't know how I missed it? Perhaps because I was focused on ports etc and not on navigable rivers.
I had RN Battleships over that area and I must have thought I had preciously stationed them in Calcutta, hence my thoughts that I could sail a BB up a river. I must have got my ports mixed up.
