prepping?

Scenario 6 8th Dec Campaign Game, no mods. Allied playing against the AI.
Okay, I understand the value of assault units prepping. If you don't know what you are assaulting, you are going to get some rude surprises.
But what about the various other units in the rear areas moving up to release other units to go forward?>
Say I have a RAF BF in Calcutta that will go forward to say Chittagong to allow another BF that has good Engr and good AV spt to go forward.
Does the Calcutta BF need to prep for Chittagong? Are there any efficiency losses if they simply take over a friendly base and provide support? Are there ant positive benefits if they do prep for Chittagong?
Looking at all the units I have, if I sat down and reviewed all the prepping for all of them, I would be tied up in minutiae for many hours a day.
So Can I ignore the Prepping work for units not likely to encounter the enemy?

"Can I ignore the Prepping work for units not likely to encounter the enemy?"

Yes. It is actually good to leave their prepping alone, since only units with 100 preparation will train (increase exp without combat) - up to their national max limit.

I actually have a USAAF BF in Burma. Looking at it, it is prepping for Port Huemenene (Sp?) despite being at Akyab. But it is still performing very well.
I guess my question was if there was some obscure rule that I was missing that assigned benefits or caused penalties if I did not prep my rear area LCUs.
Thanks for the reply.

No benefits or penalties that I know of, prepping points only matter for actual combat and for training, but do not impact unit performance for tasks like construction, AV support, loading/unloading. Would be nice if it was the case - some efficiency penalties for less than fully prepped units would help to slow-down the operational tempo of the game.

Agreed. It’s not necessary for non-combat units but it does allow me to see what I have planned for a unit without checking my notes.

I wondered for some time about how air and naval HQs should be prepped (location vs target), but never saw any evidence that it mattered.

Especially in China you want to reach 100 preparation as fast as possible to start train units to national max. exp. Lot of your Chinese units are 30s exp and even worse morale.

I think the exception is amphibious unloading, where prep is both a combat issue and a "knowing how/where to land" issue. Unprepped units seem to take a lot more "lost over the side" casualties before the shooting starts.

You want to prep for a base you want to defend, actually. High prep will give you a bonus on effective AV during combat at that base, although I forget these days if it requires an HQ to take advantage of that bonus or not.

Note that you can receive a "preparation(-)" penalty when being attacked and your units have low prep.

The HQ bonus is a % on top of the fully prepped bonus, AFAIK. And you need the Command HQ in range, + a lower HQ in range, + all prepped for the same target, + a die roll to get the 100% bump in raw AV.

I don't think it's an all/nothing, but a spectrum for the bonus.
