1 - When you set a sub to lay some mines how can you tell if it did or not? I have tried a few times, but can’t tell that it has. Do all subs have "mines" on them or do I have to return them to port to pick some up?

2 – When you have several bomber squads of the same type of AC is there any reason “not” to combine them. Sure makes the game turns a bit faster. If not then how large is too large. A squad of 30, 40 or 50 AC a problem?

3 – Are the bases from Bougainville south along the slot “non-malaria” bases?

4 – What ships do you usually take with your CV’s? BB’s, CA’s, DD’s? Do you usually combine 2 or more CV’s in a task group?

Thanks for your time! :)

1....dunno - only messed with this off of auto pilot once or twice myself

2. only up to the max squadron number will actually fly as far as I know - you will see extra planes go into the reserve.

3. no - only Noumea and other bases on that island (i think) and Oz south of Cooktown as far as I remember

4. I usually try to put 2 CVs in a group, one with its F4Fs on escort, the other 100% on CAP. As far as escorts - I try to have 2-4 CLs/CAs (2 if there will be a second task force, 3-4 if this TF is alone, some Seagulls ASW and others with naval search) and a CLAA if I have one, plus about 6-8 DDs.

I guess to break it down differently...I have 2 cruisers, and 3-4 destroyers per CV, plus a CLAA for the TF if available.

Oh yeah - I will have an AO and DD replenishment TF somewhere around per Air Combat TF, but I'll be damned if I don't always forget about them and end up putting in to port to refuel anyway...

You can change mission type for submarine at sea, but this doesn’t indicate that sub armament can be changed at sea. To load mines sub must be at mine depot, these are only at Truk, Brisbane and Noumea (sp?? simple word, but I’m always forgetting where that ‘o’ must be). When you’re picking up particular sub for minelaying TF you can see such message, “S-44 is loading Mk.10 mines into tubes” or something like that. When you have sub with mines onboard (check it at ship menu to be sure) in sub minelaying TF, set a designation hex where you want to place mines, sub will go there and will lay minefield, if minelaying was successful you’ll see mine sign (uh just a little dot actually, red or green) at targeted hex.

Here is what manual says:

Sub Minelaying -A TF with a Sub Minelaying mission is looking to move to its destination hex and lay a minefield. It will then return home. Sub minelaying missions will have their torpedo load out decreased to one torpedo per torpedo tube due to having mines placed onboard, unless the submarine is specially fitted to always carry mines that don ’t take space away from the normal torpedo load. / All sub minelaying TFs – cruise to DH, lay minefield, initiate sub combat.

When mining is done, it’s better to switch sub back to ‘sub patrol’ mission, in order to let a sub invest one available torpedo salvo with best effect.

Hope this helps

hmm - now I have a question - which subs are outfitted with this extra mine laying capacity?

Is it a particular class?

Yes. These submarine classes have mine containers as a design feature: IJN- I-121; USN- Argonaut

Thanks for the help guys! Some day I might win a campaign. ;) Another couple of questions.

How long does it take to build an air base from:
0 to 1
1 to 2
2 to 3 … etc

How about a port from:
0 to 1
1 to 2
2 to 3 … etc

What units are for building airbases or ports? Engineering units of course, but any kind in particular?

Can you start building a port or base on any hex that has a coorosponding friendly color dot on the map?

The great building question is covered quite nicely in one of the FAQ's at Spooky's website ... take a look at the anchored thread here for details. I'd post it, but thats like plager...sm, only fair to give the credit where due as someone spent a heck of a lot of time going through day by day, size by size, building a table...

In fact you can get all answers reading these forums and Spooky site as well, almost everything has been already discussed. Try to search forums and you’ll defiantly find what you need, in popular layout. You can even find out what is the velocity of african swallow! ;) there are some local ornithologists down here.

Ok thanks! Where is this web site? :)

One more question... Do you use AO’s to follow and fuel task groups or do you use TK’s?

The sub must be in a minelaying sub TF. It must then go into a port where mines are available; Truk, Numea, or Brisbane. When there the TF must refuel at port to reload its ammo. Now click on the subs name and open your sub's ship information screen (7.10 in the manual - version 2.2) On this page you will see what ammo (topedos and mines) is loaded. So far my Jap subs have always had 1 torpedo and 2 mines. Next send your sub minelaying TF to its destination hex. Be sure the TF is set on - Retirement Allowed. If you've done it correctly the TF will now sail to the destination hex and lay its mine field. You will know this has been done because a minefield icon appears in the hex, and you can now go back to the sub's ship information screen and see that there are now 0 mines loaded where before there were some. At this point I convert the sub to a sub patrol TF and sail to any nearby port with supply and rearm with torpedos. Every sub I get at Truk leaves there in a sub minelaying TF. I also like to use subs to guard my minefields. I sometimes get an easy shot at a minesweeper.

Thanks again gents! I am getting better by the day at this sim and the FAQ thread by Spooky has a lot of info that is a huge help.

Am confused by something. Today I was working on setting up some Routine Convoys. Set up 3 task groups, but I can only get one to set to Routine Convoy. All the ships are AP's, but something is different with them. In the actual task group screen scroll through:
Human Control
Computer Control
but only one task group has the third option of
Routine Convoy.

What did I do different/wrong?
