Is there a doctrine for deploying and operating UAVs? I know that I am doing something wrong because every time I use them, they get shot down unless they are escorted which beats the whole concept. Specifically, how are they protected from enemy aircraft on patrol?

I'd look at altitude and using no nav zones around SAM sites. If you're trying to develop one for a non-player side, I'd go for a support mission-change the default on station altitude. The trick is staying out of defensive envelopes while still being at a useful altitude for the sensor you're carrying.

It is worth keeping in mind that most western UAVs were built during an era when airspace was not contested. Some of the earlier Cold War examples like the RQ-2 Pioneer were available in the CW but never intended to be used in contested airspace but in support of amphibious and naval gunfire operations - where you need to own the skies.

The more advanced UAVs that came later were ideal for Iraq or Afghanistan or other COIN type operations. They tend to be low and/or slow and lack any form of defensive mechanisms. Some of the larger ones replace large patrol AC which will be shot down just as easily if not deployed properly.

So the best way to use them is... very carefully.

Some of the newer Russian or Chinese or Israeli examples are better. I am sure western ones will improve but the current bunch make good targets.

Newer U.S. drones like the RQ-170 and RQ-180 are really effective ELINT platforms. In my editor mode testing, the RQ-180 was not tracked by a S-300 battalion until a 15nm approach. You can use them as stand-off ELINT platforms successfully.

There are some (e.g. Israeli) drones with jammers. Very useful if not wanting to risk dedicated Electronic Warfare plane.

Now, this is an idea! Send ahead of a strike at low altitude and pop up as the attack airplane show up. I like it.

In the China invades Okinawa scenario. all you get is UAV's. The UAV's that fly at 85 000 feet, they get chased, but do not get shot down.

One interesting thing I've noted is a TOR system has an engagement cone and a detection cone, and they are not the same. For example it can detect using the radar, and look at targets directly above using the camera, but the fire control radar does not look straight up. If it's on the edge of that cone it seems the FCR has a tough time getting enough reflection for a lock on some drones too. Really neat stuff to see in the game.

For Predator type drones, you will notice their very small RCS area, so you should be able to get closer than with any aircraft. For example, a Chinese drone is more stealthy than a J-20 with tanks, and just a little more than in internal config.
I've been able to loiter half within a SAM engagement zone without a problem. It's a bit of a guessing game, and when moved closer, their interceptors flew out and easily shot them down with their better short range radar.
So less and answer and more a point, as I'm also trying to figure out best use for them. Maybe fill in some sensor gaps.
