What is the function of the Vietnam_no3D executable? I executed it but the game moves in jumps, executed in normal mode that does not happen to me.

It is for those with less RAM available to run the game with a smaller RAM footprint. In that mode, as the name implies, only game's 2D side graphics are loaded up, and available.

In other words: boardgame mode only.

There is some kind of a bug in scrolling for the no3D version that doesn't appear with regular executable. Mentioned in this thread:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5132101

It seems that with every scrolling movement, the game engine is doing some extra calculation that it shouldn't, thus making it really slow. Confirmed so far with three computers(Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux Mint running Wine).

Thanks for the report. Confirmed. I will investigate.

The no3D option is there for people who truly need it, who could not otherwise play the game normally, with both 2D and 3D. You would need it if the game would not launch, on an underpowered netbook for example. (I had a Linux netbook that would only run the game using Vietnam_no3D.exe.)

I confess to being totally stumped as to why 2D map scrolling would slow down using the no3D option.

The suggested workaround for this is to toggle ON Options > Scrolling > Scroll Bar.

Also try Options > Scrolling > Smooth Scroll toggled OFF.

Use the Jump Map (hotkey J), and when available (in CSVN 1.01 and thereafter), the new Display > Hex Jump feature.
