I am wondering if the Chinese pilots that have achieved "Ace" status got there by shooting down unescorted bombers? Are the games referenced against the AI or a PBM opponent?
I wonder how the Chinese aces do against Japanese fighters?
Just looking for insight.

I have had I-15s shoot down Zeros. The I-15 has really good maneuverability. The main problem with them is the limited replacements and lack of supply.

I have some information for your reference.
Stege 1, Shanghai and Nanking
In Aug 1937, Chinese pilots perform very good at the beginning of the war in Shanghai. The oral agreement between IJA and IJN was "IJA responsible for North China", so IJA did not show up at start. IJN was blindly confident with "no escort bombing" and underestimate CAF too much. CAF announced over 30 kills in the first 3 days (including 20 Nells confirmed by IJN). CAF pilots got experience and morale greatly improved (70/90 in WITP AE I guess?), Really shocked their enemy. At this stage CAF pilots show equal skills and morale to IJN. IJN suffered great loss due to bad strategy.
In Sep, IJA got airfield and joined battle. CAF could not get any replacement and enough AV support lead to many operational loss (one ace scored 11 (Wiki 7) died). Claude based on Kaga show up and broke the balance.
In Oct, CAF ready number dropped quickly from 346 to 81 while Japan increased to 400-800. CAF fighter commander (scored 4) died in a airfield raid (no AA defense at all). CAF changed tactic to small group night mission.
Dec, CAF nearly get wiped out. Total score is about 100. The good side is most experienced pilots were saved.
Stage 2, Hankow
Jan 1938, reinforcement of I-15/I-16 started to come (total 542 fighters, 318 bombers till 1941). They did not match Claudes.
Feb, the first battle resulted loss 10:11. CAF resized fighter unit to a large one (50 cap) using Boom and Zoom tactic against Claude.
Apr, 19 I-15 + 45 more by Soviet volunteers VS 27 Claude + 18 Nell. Result loss 12:21, over 50 Japan air crew killed. A Chinese pilot crashed into a Claude after got a kill and wounded. KI-27 Nate joined IJA forced Russian bombers to raise their altitude from 6000 to 21000.
May - Oct, IJN lost 136 planes and 23 ships sunk 67 wounded. Claudes were mainly used for escorting.

Is above what you want or more detailed materials?

Not sure you understand my question.
I am referring to the game not real life results.

Playing Nasty Nasty Nasty Nasty Ironman (or thereabouts) the AI has practically unlimited Betties/Helens/Sallies/Ritas etc. to throw at you.
I've had USAAF aces with over 100 kills and a squadron like 35th FG/40th FS will have over 1,200 kills to its credit. The USAAF uber aces tend to start their careers flying P-40Ks over Chittagong, Cox's and Akyab, where they rack up untold Betties, Helens, Oscars, etc. USN pilots tend to do well early but eventually the IJ runs out of aircraft to send against the CVs. Even the big waves of kamis toward the end face so many USN pilots that the USN leaders don't get too many kills. I usually get a few Brits like Cooper-Slipper with some big numbers as well. They also tend to start their careers at Chittagong, usually in Hurri IIBs.
EDIT: I've had Chinese aces get into the 30s and 40s, primarily against unescorted raids. I'll also pull some of them into Burma where they tend to get more action.
When it comes to PBEM, the kills are much lower. Someone who plays PBEM can chime in, but the numbers seem to be lower than historical (e.g. Bong and McGuire won't beat their real life scores).
Cheers,
CB
