My reflections on new forum

Overall, I like the new forum. Graphical attachment flexibility is great.

However, I have to be an American nerd and point out my 3 nitpicks.... (no good deed goes unpunished so to speak).

1. The page numbers for the topic are all the way on the right.
2. Emojis are weak imho
3. Who online is at the very bottom

Not expecting anything, just pointing out my personal gripes. I am sure there is workarounds for the emojis...

Overall grade: A-. Well done. :D That is the very happy emoji.

#1 is a very definite negative, I can live with #2 and #3. Overall, I like it, especially the better search function.

Another unfortunate casualty is that every AAR I was following reverted back to page one of the post so I am back to square one trying to figure out where I left off with all of them sigh...

There seems to be a whole lot of space on the sides. Future adds coming?

Took me a bit to figure out I needed to sign in again.

Where is the Green Button?

You can change that by going into your user preferences and changing the board style to matrix games-wide. Then the board display will fit the length the whole page as long as you are signed in.

I am going to add a fourth item:

The board index hot links should also be at the very bottom of the page too, so I don't have to scroll all the way back to the top to find them.

Again this is minor quibbling, if your keyboard has a "Home" and "End" key you can use that to jump on the page. Bet you could program that into your mouse too.

As a program manager in a previous life, it's amazing to me that they could have screwed up so MANY obvious things. Lost PMs? No Attachments? Attachment size limits? Attachment types? Embedded links? the Link button itself? Page numbers? No green button? Are you kidding me? Was there ANY testing? Complete and total clown show.

As many of you are already aware, we have been working hard these past few months on upgrading the Matrix forums to new and improved forum software.

This software is now ready to be made live and we will be switching to the new software on the 22nd of February (tomorrow) at 16:00 GMT.

The upgrade itself will require approximately 2 hours of downtime, with the forums themselves being unavailable until the upgrade has been completed.

You may notice that your private messages are missing when we switch over - do not worry. We will be importing these to the new forum software once the new forums have been made live. It may take us a little bit of time to transfer them over, so please bare with us while migrate the data.

If you have any questions or comments, please drop them here.

We hope everyone is looking forward to the improvements that come with more modern forums.
We did our best to advise everyone that migrating some of the data (such as the PM's) would take a little longer, because we've moved many generations of software and that's always a difficult export/import process.

I moved a company from Notes to Office365 and it took months to move some of the more complex things.

As a project manager you must understand that sometimes your users will just attack you even when you've done your very best to advise them that some things will take a little more time.

In fairness to MG, they have warned us, they have given us an opportunity to pre-test the new site, they have warned us that some of the data migration may take some time and we should cut them some slack.

They offer us free vehicle to chat about our hobby, they are not a multimillion dollar company and seem to be caring about there customers.

It’s not even been a week since the cut over, relax, chill out, sit back and enjoy the show and quit with all the negative vibes man…

I have been on forums that lost everything on a migration....

My pms also go to email...so I didn't lose anything there....but I was also warned and could have backed them up, too.

But there is a hiccup now, can't post pictures for whatever reason. I put up a post in Tech about it....

My only comment is that it's extremely dangerous to change anything when it involves hundreds of old men set in their ways.

Also posted in Tech Support:

It's not just pictures. My latest posts does not contain the small .zip files with a text file inside it. I also tried editing the post and attaching it. The process of attaching and uploading goes fine, but after submitting the post the attachment is gone.

Previous posts still show their attachments, whether pictures or zips.

When something as obvious as a "link button" simply doesn't work, that's not something which "takes time". It's a complete failure of basic functionality. As for PM experience, I led the team which migrated a legacy, home-built accounting system at Raytheon (you may have heard of them) over to SAP. We tested, tested, tested, and then tested again. And when we finally flipped the switch? Everything worked. This isn't even 1/1000th as complex, and it's a goat rope.

Both images and links and the related buttons are working.

The only thing that is no longer working is the /[image] tags. These tags are legacy and is no longer supported. It has been switched to [url]/[img] now, which is the modern standard.

The `img` tag is what I used for my online hosting site:
