What are these and how are they used? I cannot figure out what this particular mine is for. Are they for aerial mining? if so, when do those mission become available?

Had to remind myself with a google search but it's an aerial mine not used in stock scenarios. Something that makes little sense!

Hate to bust your bubble, but it would seem that they work just fine

Night Air attack on Mataram , at 59,109

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 30 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-49-IIb Helen x 5

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 24

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Ki-49-IIb Helen laying Type 3 Mine from 7000 feet

CAP engaged:
VF-35 with F6F-3 Hellcat (3 airborne, 21 on standby, 0 scrambling)
3 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 5000 , scrambling fighters between 5000 and 15000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 22 minutes

And since I swept some of them the same turn, I guess they really did get dropped.
Scenario 2.

You can drop aerial mines.....but I have never seen them actually hit any ship...ever. Even mass dropped Allied aerial minefields.

Always more than willing to be proved wrong, though! ;)

That I don't know about, for me the minefield was detected on the turn it was dropped.
Maybe next year I will send some B-29s to do some mining and see what happens

I did some research and it seems I used 12 type 3 mines on that mission. Not sure how 5 Helens used 12 mines - and I saw that you cleaned them right up. No surprise. Like I said, it was more of a test than anything else.

Try laying the mines at night....still don't believe they will hit anything.

I cleared 27 mines from where you laid them.

Interesting as I only used 12 from my inventory :D I think someone is over exaggerating their importance.

From the combat reports

June 29, 1943
TF 129 encounters mine field at Mataram (59,109)

Allied Ships
AM Tui

4 mines cleared

--------------------------
June 30, 1943
TF 218 encounters mine field at Mataram (59,109)

Allied Ships
AM Moa
AM Geelong

12 mines cleared

---------------------------------------------

TF 218 encounters mine field at Mataram (59,109)

Allied Ships
AM Moa
AM Geelong

11 mines cleared

==============================

I thought you should have dropped 30

Code: Select all

Ki-49-IIb Helen max load is 2205
Type 3 mine has a load of 352
2205 / 352 = 6+
5 bombers laying mines should equal 30 mines
Maybe some disbursed

City attack and on the bottom left is a button for mine port. There has to be a size 1+ enemy port in range or it will be greyed out.

I don't doubt the combat report but in my intelligence screen I have only used 12 Type 3 mines. So unless 1 mine in my inventory equals 2 or 3 real mines its hard to say. Maybe we can both keep an eye on them when we use them and perhaps figure this out.

What was the date when the Allies are allowed to use air dropped mines?
Something in 1943, I believe.

Is the same true for the Japanese ?

We are in July 1943 and we both can air drop mines. One further requirement is that the base has to have 2x the required supply.
As Allies you do not start producing the Mk-13 air dropped mine until 12/42 so you would not be able to drop any until sometime in 1943

The type 3 mine also starts production in 12/42 and produces 45 per month. So on 1/1/43 when you can start using them you should have approx 45-50 mines in your pool.
