How do I place a station where I want it?

I'm having an issue with attempting to place a research station, I'm trying to place these stations close together so they don't get destroyed by pirates so easily, but I've noticed there doesn't appear to be any way to manually place a construction on a non-colony. In the attached image below I'm trying to build the station on the red dot, but the construction ship keeps building in the orange area only. You can actually see a hauler picking up scraps from the last scuttled station which was built there, do all planets just have preset points where stations are placed down at?

EDIT: After a bit more messing around, it appears that the placement is merely random, and not always upon the same location.

With a construction ship, you essentially can't, but it is possible to place stations where you want when building a station at a colony. Select the colony, hold down Ctrl, then right-click where you want the station to go, then select the station from the context menu. The station will be placed as close as possible to the place where you clicked, though it will always be the same distance away from the planet.
