If you are experiencing issues with the release version based on the Matrix Games installer or Steam, we have a manual hotfix for DW2 that may resolve some of the most critical issues.

You will need to install this manual if you wish to try it today. In order to install this on Steam or Matrix or GOG, you will need to find your installation folder for Distant Worlds 2 and then copy the contents of this zip file (including sub-folders) into that folder. Because this is a manual process, if this breaks your game you will have to completely uninstall, reinstall and try again if things go wrong.

Using Steam, you can find where Distant Worlds 2 is installed by right clicking on it in your library list of games, then choosing "Properties" then "Local Files" then clicking the "Browse" button. That will take you right to the installation folder.

We should have this available in a non-manual form tomorrow.

Note that this 1.0.1.6 hotfix also includes all of the updates in the earlier 1.0.1.5 hotfix. So you only need to install this 1.0.1.6 hotfix.

However if you have already installed the 1.0.1.5 hotfix, then it is fine to simply overwrite that with this 1.0.1.6 hotfix.

Changes in the 1.0.1.6 Hotfix Build:

- further fixes to crashes after lengthy play sessions
- further improvements to performance by making sure GPU runs at maximum performance instead of sometimes using power-saving mode
- further improvements to performance by ensuring faster GPU is selected (when also have integrated video)

windows defender says it has trojan

Virustotal says it's clean.

Avira got no issues with it either.

File removed as we'll be rolling it out as a proper update today.

Avira thought it was a virus, and now even the validation from Steam isn't working any more: distantworlds2.exe is missing

Even with putting the DW2 folder into exemptions via avira-config AND reinstalling DW2 it is now completely broken!

Please help!

I'm not personally familiar with Avira, but it sounds like it still thinks DW2 is a virus. There could be some exception that you're missing. I'd recommend re-checking the settings in your anti-virus, uninstalling DW2 and removing all files and reinstalling (without the hotfix, wait for the proper update).

Thanks, I'll try this and edit if it works for anyone else happen to stumble upon this.

EDIT: I did several things:

1) putting the folder of DW2 into AVIRA exemptions and validate/reinstall and delete the false quarantene (DID NOT WORK)
2) stopping AVIRA (for 10 minutes) (DID NOT WORK)
3) Rebooting the computer (also a Windows update happened) (NOW IT WORKS! )

...I don't know what is going on, to be frank. Maybe a reboot was needed to really trigger the exemption and delete the memory of the virus being there?


4) Just to check: Trying to reapply the patch while the DW2 folder is not an exemption in Avira still triggers a virus warning. Did not install it.

5) Making DW2 an exemption in Avira and applying the update version and DW2 now works.

Yeah, Avira does seem to detect it as a Virus via Heuristics - which is educated guessing.
And then instantly moves it into Quarantine.

You have to reinstall the .exe, whitelist it in avire and try again.
Edit: Nevermind, whitelisting is no longer a option. In any of Aviras "Options".
so just turn it off for 1 minutes before clicking on play in the launcher.

Yes, you can whitelist, you just have to open "avconfig.exe".. You cannot use their UI anymore, the config is not accessible through it.

Eric, Do we have an ETA on the Steam hotfix update? Just a general timeframe...

We're working on it now, should be in the next 2-3 hours I'd guess.
