Found a 'trap' system.

So, the boskara home system seems to be borked in my game. first off, it took a LONG time for the empire card to display their race/planet icon or to show their empire flag. i actually thought they were independents for a long time. when i go to my notice filter, they are at the end of the list, after all the pirates and NOT adjacent to the other empires. possibly not relevant, but another oddity i noticed.
also, their system seems to have some kind of 'storm' on the go. i see green lightning frequently, which seems to disable ships, leaving all mine that ever arrived there stranded. and further stranding tankers and other ships that arrive, either to assist or trying to pass through. there are no indications, besides the lightning, that this system has anything special about it, i cannot find any options to tell my ships to avoid it, i cannot scuttle my ships without getting them to a spaceport somewhere, so they just keep accumulating, around 20 or so there now. and the boskara whose home system this is is at 0 across the board for victory progress. cause, you know, they cant DO ANYTHING. just like my ships there.
so i have a bunch of ships i have to pay for, that i cant get rid of, whose number is growing, in a completely worthless system, with a completely helpless empire, and i have NO IDEA why this system does this, how to avoid it, how to prevent it, or anything at all about wtf is going on here.

i had something similar in my game...
a explore ping location, i send my explore ship there once i had the reach to get there and it just stopped and ordering to go to the system always ended with "no mission".
then i noticed it gets disabled with the storm of that system. and always resetting the manual order to go somewhere to disabled and then to no mission so it stays there. it doesnt keep the order i gave it.
took me way too long to get my exploreer ship out of that area again with a mix of manual orders and auto explore of the next system.
this issue certainly can use some fixing in some way. it seems the post above even has it worse as new ships try to help the ones stuck and also get stuck then...
i think fitting ships with ion defence modules might prevent them getting disabled over and over... but yea... this is an issue.

Has anyone figured out a solution to this? Do Ion Defense Modules actually prevent being disabled in these storms? I have two near my home system, one that happens to house an enemy empire, making it impossible to attack them.

Ion shields do in fact prevent ships from being disabled. Empires starting out in these storms is unintentional though, as far as I know.

i added some ion defences to my explorers and now they managed to fly into the system with the storm... so yea ion defences help.

I had the same issue and was far from researching ion defenses. Had to open game editor and manually delete the ships stuck in the storm as they weren't budging.

I'd submit this as a bug. Sadly even with a good amount of beta testers most of them were not trained or experienced at it so stuff like this can get through the QA phase. The very first release of dw1 was much like this with a period of bug squashing after it went live and a true mass test could be had. Even the big dev houses do it because you can only do so much with in house testing so the focus is always on game breakers and balance breakers.

Yeah it's sort of realistic that a ship might run into something new and unknown that would disable it, but at least let us abandon it and not keep paying for it. Also if it can move the AI should be able to fly it out without it reverting to No Mission over and over.

Agreed. Does anyone know if there is a way to remove the ion storms completely, i.e like terraforming? Or through the game editor? I haven't tinkered around with it enough to know. I ask because the borders of my empire have big holes in them where the systems with these storms raging are present, and the AI isn't smart enough to avoid them, so I end up having a ton of civvy ships just...abandoned in these areas.

If they're civilian ships, you can at least delete them. It's exploration ships getting stuck that are the real headache.
You can't remove the storms. Your best bet is to research the ion shields - they're found a little ways down the ion weapons tree.

can confirm ion shields work, I found independent colony in green lightning storm. I got it colonized. So I had to put Ion shields on everything. Can't build a Starport there it, blows up immediately if you try to build it.

Control + Right Click -> Scrap ship immediately.

Or you can gift it to an NPC. He will pay for the useless ship

Love it when games have multiple solutions lol. "Here have this free state-of-the-art exploration ship. Just one little catch, it's stuck in an ion storm."
