I dont know if this will be possible but here goes:
more hull types, and bigger hull types
the option of setting up listning post in systems
new weapon types
orbital defence sattelites for your colonies
possibly expand the tech tree to accomodate it all
well thats some stuff that I would like to see in future updates
btw I love this game

I think that the navigational commands for ships ought to be improved a bit.
For example, the only way to give specific movement instructions to a ship is to, first, set it to allow you to handle combat, and then to send it on a regular mission.
I think that "Cruise to xxx location," "Go to xxx location," and "Thrust to xxx location" ought to be part of the regular list of commands, usable when the ship is not on a mission when the captain is handling combat.
Also, another neat feature would be "Shadow xxx ship," which would have whatever ship you're ordering follow some foregin ship.
To succeed in shadowing another ship, your ship would need higher detection distance then the enemy (so you could see them and stay out of their range), and probably some cloak/stealth tech that the ship being shadowed doesn't have.

I'd like to be able to sort ships by fleet number assignment from the focus menu. Sorting by hull type would be nice too. Or even ship name (I'd name them alphabetically if I had to

).
I often end up with several fleets in big system games that I like to balance with different ship sizes and designs that complement one another, and it's often a chore to go through the focus list visually sorting by using those little numbers to see which fleet needs which ship.
Another idea, if each ship designated to each fleet number could have it's name displayed in a unique color in the focus menu, that'd be extremely cool. It would make it easier to tell at a glance what ships I have in which fleet.

Okay, how about this:
A new option for spies; "Impersonate a crewman on next ship to visit this planet."
The spy then acts as a homing beacon, giving away the location of that ship. The spy can also be ordered to sabotage that ship by damaging/destroying components.
So, you could strand a ship if your spy manages to destroy the engines, then you swoop in with an assault pod-equipped ship and capture it and tow it back to a planet.
Also, perhaps a new ship captain tactics setting: "Disable," which would have the ship captain strategically use his weapons to destroy the engines and/or power plant(s) on the other ship for the sole purpose of capturing it.
