Fleets Cancelling Attack Orders?

Twice I had a pirate ship raid my mining outpost and my fleets faught me tooth and nail when I told them to go attack the raider.
I take a defense fleet from a nearby system and tell them to go attack the raiding ship. I confirm the fleet changes to manual and it says "attacking xxx" then I see them start to move when all of a sudden the order is cancelled, the ships stop mid travel, and it says they have no orders. The pirate ship is clearly still visible and is still mid raid, but my fleet decided it changed its mind and just wanted to stop.
I know my fleet can engage it because if I tell them to first move to a position near there then they make it no problem, but they won't stick with an attack order that I give.
Should my individual ships within the fleet be set to Full Auto? Manual? Something in between? Is there something about the fleet settings causing them to interrupt a manually issued order?
