What's the difference between "Study" and "Slavage" in THIS case?

Got a message about a "crashed research station", with 3 buttons (see screenshot below). The description of what the "Study" and "Salvage" buttons do is very confusing, at least to me:

Study: possible to learn a great deal by studying the remnants
Salvage: put the recovered material to use in advancing our own technology

“Learn a great deal” and “advancing our own technology” seem very similar.

My undrestanding is that “Salvage” usually means getting the debris for the materials/resources/revenus. But what about in the context of this message?

Any input appreciated...

It's a bit subtle, I agree. Study in this case means looking for information and lore, whereas salvage means tech and possibly resources.

it would be cool if i.e. zenox get better outcome from study and i.e. teekan get better outcome with salvage, as these would fit their race more.
a bit race based results.

Thanks Eric.

For those that might be interested, here's the message I got after clicking on "Salvage":

Quick question,
if a Explorer finds Ressources on a Planet, where do they go ?
Nearest Planet, Homeworld, Equally between planets, Limbo ?

Hot Tip :

If you don't know what something is going to do, save the game and then you can try both options.

You can't save while that choice dialog is up though.

Hot Tip 2

If you like the result, save as well, because Random Events.

Generally it'll be on the ship that discovered it, although I believe it can go to the homeworld sometimes. Depends on the event.

If it's on the explorer then once it returns to refuel it should drop them off.

Okay, thank you.

One of my explorers found a Datacore,
I send it to pick it up, it did, then nothing happened.

then haakonish pirates showed up with ships that trashed my Ghost Fleet and then the rest of my system .. so yeah, I don't know what could have happened.
