Docking bays matter?

I have noticed the auto designer for starports, does not add docking bays. Then I notice that ships are constantly cued for said starports. Do docking bay quantities still matter for starports like in DWU?

This is the one area, I do not like the new design structure since I can't make a shipyard station with many construction bays or a trade station with many docking bays.

It would be great to have dedicated shipyards and trade stations to deal with starport congestion.

A construction yard counts as a docking bay, and since both construction yards and docking bays must be on an external slot to function, there is no point in adding docking bays to space ports.

Does docking bay tech apply to construction yards, because while the docking bay tech adds docking bays per docking bay, it does not seem to be the case that construction yard docking bays are increasing as well or at least I am not seeing the number increase with the tech.

What would be nice if it was a component that allowed ships to be serviced by cargo drones instead of having to physically dock at a station would make it a very useful component.

Construction yards do not scale with docking bay tech, no. You need construction research for that.

Later on in the game this happens all the time anyway. If a ship doesn't fit through the docking bay, it uses cargo drones.

You say that the amount of times I have had to wait for mining bases to process ques is immense especially when it comes to trying to refuel despite them having +4 docking bay modules

My understanding is that docking bays on interior slots still count, but they don't let ships enter/exit the way an exterior slot bay does. Construction yards only give 1 bay per yard and importantly that bay is used by an under construction ship so if the station lacks extra docking bays construction will prevent ships from using the station for cargo transfer.
