I thought I'd try a play-through where I postpone leaving my home system for as long as possible.
I have hit a situation where I am quite well developed but cannot design or build a colony ship - every time I add a colony module to my designs it fails even if I have a skip drive, because I need a hyperdrive.
Does this mean you cannot colonise even good planets in your home system unless you research stable warp fields?

Yeah, My herpderp. I was doing something daft. I tried some things, and I can actually design a ship (with say, an escort hull) with a colony module that will fly with just a skip drive but it doesn't count as a colony ship, or a build-able colony ship design.
Because I needed expanded civilian ships.
I am still getting my head around how ship design works. I have probably forgotten some stuff from DWU also.
