Independent colonies turning into empires?!

Running a small galaxy game with Zenox.

I've seen twice now that an independent colony becomes a full fledged empire, randomly. To be clear: it's not being colonized by another empire. It becomes its own new independent empire.

The galactopedia never suggests that this is possible. Any one else had this?

This is a normal mechanic that existed since the first game.

If they grow enough in population, they can become a full empire.

This was a mechanic in DW1 you could turn on or off.

It is possible it works that way in DW2 as well, but if so it is poorly implemented. A Empire with no resource to build even a mining ship is not a challenge.

Consider it a way to conquer the planet, with less reputation impact than invading a Indy.

Some of the greatest empires in my games have “colonies” next there names so some can be pretty successful

I thought this couldn't happen in DW2
From p20 of the manual...

"Please note that in Distant Worlds 2, the Independents will not become empires in their own right, but they are open to diplomacy, trade and conquest."

:?

It DOES say that in the manual. And I noticed the colonies expanding too, but I always thought maybe it was when you find a similar-race empire, they assimilate it. Is that what happened?

I always play with 6 AI players, so I have "one of each race".
I think before the colony turned empire, the original human empire was defeated.

It depends on the Race and location really. I've met a Securan Empire that has taken 3 more colonies and has the third highest population in the galaxy. I know they get a massive pop growth bonus, but it's ridiculous how quickly they've grown. Most AIs that have started from Pre-Warp like me have 1-2 colonies.

How did they get 3 planets if they can not even build a mining station?
How are they goign to defend themself, if they can never build one to even start setting up a economy?

I have no idea. They have warp drives, and a spaceport that looks like that of a pirate faction. I'll post a screenshot tomorrow

Did those planets happen to be Boskara Planets?

I ask, because there is a special event where a Boskara Planet turns out to be ancient guardians, that awake into a empire the second you approach their planet.

I'm not sure why people think independents has no resources, that are loaded well enough you can make a space station and a big fleet from the planet resources just after colonizing it.

Even if they were somehow "empty" trade exist in the game, you don't need miners at all.

I have a 1 colony empire, formally independent, no resources outside of planet that I can see, and they are construction empire buildings a tier ahead of me. The ultimate tall empire. I want to know how to do that. Lol

Is the planet named Greer and full of Boskara?

If so, check your message log about "Ancient Guardians".

Um, yah. That sounds bad. Also, guardians sounds like good guys. These guys don't seem good to me. They are smack dab in the middle of my Empire and I've just been leaving them there thinking it wasn't worth my effort since they're on a volcanic world.

Volcanic worlds are perfectly fine for Volcanic species.
While the quality of those planets is less, the species also get much more bonus. (+30 to +40%) so they can live on the them quite well.

So if anything, you want that colony to unlock volcanic world colonisation.
