Submarine Depth, for launching the SUBROC missile?

Had trouble launching the SUBROC, from Los Angles class sub in the Submarine Tutorial 2.4. Instructions in the tutorial said 'Shallow', but it wasn't launching. Finally surfaced, and the missile launched. (Sank the Akula with 20 mins left.)

Being surfaced obviously worked, but what is the deepest that submarine can be, when launching a missile (not just the SUBROC)? Periscope? 100 feet?

The DB entry for the missile should indicate what depths it is launchable from.

The SUBROC missile lists a Launch Altitude of -164 ft. Which I read it as,
  • It can be launched from a depth of -164 feet below the surface.
  • Since that info was for SUBROC, not the LA class subs, different missiles could have different launch depths.
Is that how you would interpret this?

Yes. You should be able to launch it at a depth of 164 feet or shallower. Looking at the DB entry now, it also cannot fire at targets located closer than two nautical miles.

Interesting. When I found the Akula, was practically on top of it. By trying to get away from me, it entered my missile range.

Given it's a nuke you really don't want to fire it too close to your own sub.

When I was playing one of the Northern Inferno scenarios years ago one of the Soviet AI submarines used a nuclear torpedo to take out one of my destroyers...and itself.

Makes sense that the developer put in a safety, to prevent that. But surprised that it allowed stww2 to get taken out by the effects of his own torpedo.

It was the cpu controlled side that launched the torpedo!

Anyway, my guess is the 2nm minimum range limitation is related to the flight profile of the missile rather than being there as a mechanism to prevent friendly fire. IIRC most ballistic missiles (and the SUBROC has a similar ballistic trajectory, even if it's not usually thought of as a ballistic missile) in CMO have some sort of minimum firing range.

Most guided munitions in CMO and real-life have some form of minimum range and/or altitude. As to the devs letting you kill yourself with a nuke, the beauty of CMO is you can do most of the stupid stuff you shouldn't do in real-life with much less severe consequences.
