What a difference late game makes.

Managed to survive the crashes to get quite advanced into a game. Raking in +200k a month, Over 4M cash on hand, terraforming everyv planet in sight, auto-crashing all research, and multiple battleship fleets.

Cant believe what a financial struggle the early and mid game is.

I may be misremembering but didn't DW:U have an event to crash the stock market, or something, to take half your money if you had too much stockpiled. Or was that Stellaris?

DW2 is my first foray into this universe, playing on normal with restless rivals.

Mostly I am trying to learn the game. Many supposedly self-evident concepts are not that self evident to me. ๐Ÿ˜

Not sure of how to pace expansion without over extending, and also trying to get a handle on the size of fleets and required troop counts. The border gore also takes some getting used to after Stellaris chokepoints.

You can end up with so much cash that you have no idear what you wanna spend them on. In my last game i rolled in as shown in the picture below. And havent even bothered to teraform all my planets.
Itยดs on extreme difficulty and 500 planets. I have a fleet of 400+ battleships, just cleaning up the galaxy.

Yeah, the thing is in higher difficulties than normal it is quite difficult to get money, because of the higher corruption offset

If you want to see what this game will eventually play like when fully fleshed out then pick up DWU on sale and give it a try. Basically the first game started out just like this one with limited features and content and a bit buggy launch but was quickly built up into a massive game with tons of variety and well honed gameplay. The only real limiting factor was its engine which simply couldn't keep up with large late game complexity and would either lag horribly or just crash. But that was only on the largest map with max stars and lots of empires and smaller maps would run fine till the end.

Most of those technical issues seem to be solved now in DW2 past some optimizing here and there for some specific hardware combinations. Once that is done then Elliot and crew will be able to focus on banging out QoL changes and adding in new content. I give them about 3 to 6 months and the game will be near perfect only waiting on expansions for a campaign and other larger features. I'm hoping the redone shakturi invasion is a bit more story driven and interactive than the old campaign though as it was mainly told through exploration dialog.

I'd love a star control 2 type of campaign. You start out prewarp then through exploration you find the old allies and enemies you faced during the last invasion and build up relations with them through missions and other interactive dialog. This would mean a far more scripted map and story than we get in the current skirmish mode but hopefully the new engine supports it.
