Started right next to a hostile neighbor- when I finally got a ‘leg up’ I invaded his homeworld (was hemmed in by other empires so nowhere to expand anyway)

And I’m paying 40 grand a year to support it while it’s assimilated. Ouch, but interesting play.

Is there anything I can do to speed this process up so it’s less of a burden on my economy, war effort, and research?

Edit: also, there a way to PEACEFULLY conquer/annex a neighbor? I have another human neighbor with the Sol system and….well…I’d like it.

There's currently a cheesy way to quickly get new pops assimilated. Let them rebel and put down the rebellion, it will grant you an immediate +30% assimilation.

I am pretty sure that high happiness and high Diplomacy techs increase assimilation speed.
So manually cut the taxes to 0%, until assimilation has made some progress.

But the rebel trick also works. You just need to get them to rebel with your troops in a nearby transport.
