Here's a screenshot from my current game (v1.0.3.6). There are 4 ships agglutinated together (one of them has armor damage; all belong to the same fleet), with a structure on top of the clump, evoquing the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

(see 1st screenshot). It looks even weirder when rotated!!!

If I select the "tower", the selection panel says "Engine Superstructure" (3rd screenshot).

A bug? A graphic glitch? An "Easter Egg"? Or part of the game?...

Sometimes ships leave some parts after destruction: containers, engine superstructure, escape pods, hull parts. You can take it and get money, techs, part of map etc.

Yes, I know there are ship debris. I've just never saw that type before. But I've just seen another engine superstructure in my game. "Mystery" solved.

I've seen this around the abandoned base that captures the first ship to discover it and also at those solitary pirate bases that have some abandoned ships and other debris around it.

That one is unusually large, most of the ones I've seen are quite a bit smaller.
