Clarification of Combat Results

Prior to starting a new PBEM game of the 1939 Small Fleet scenario I did some hot seat tests of land combat. I activated the Battles toggle and compared it to the Combat Log and there were discrepancies. For exmaple.

Initial Odds 10-1
Final Odds 9-1
There was a ground strike but the defender did not lose any SPs nor did any of the aircraft.
In the Battles display it indicated that the attacker - Land 1 and the defender - Land 4 Overrun
In the Combat Log the attacker loss was 1 but the defender was Land 5 Overrun

Why the 1 SP difference?

My friend and I are wondering about the sequence of combat results. When an attack is made and the defender takes losses reducing it's current strength below 1/3 of it's full strength there must be another "die roll" to determine if it is overrun. If the "die roll" does not produce an overrun, is there an additional die roll to determine if it suffers a result such as hold, retreat etc.?

Trying to do this from memory as I have a meeting in 5m.

The odds displayed are an estimate based on the general in the field.
The final odds account for all the other factors that might come into play like ground support. Defender ground support is technically worth twice as much as attack when looking at odds.

Overrun is the strength value, experience, and tenacity of the unit. You have to get a retreat result to overrun. I'd have to check the exact code.

Thanks for the reply. We knew about the adjustment of odds due to things like ground support but what really has us puzzled is why in the example I gave, the defender's loss in SPs in the Battles toggle was different than what was displayed in the Combat log.

I assume that your last sentence means that in determining whether a unit is overrun, the program checks it's strength, experience and tenacity.

yes...

Was the combat log and the display off by 1 strength point or many?

Off by 1 SP. See my original post in this thread.

Keep an eye on it. I want to know if it always is a 1 strength point difference at intervals or more. It could be a rounding error.
