I see from the rules (3.2.5)->

"The assaulting unit and defending unit must be on the same ground level"

So how does one remove a unit perched a top a hill or knoll with no surrounding elevation equivalents ?

That's an error in the manual.

They just have to be adjacent and on land (or shallow water).
