Question about colonization and nebula clouds

If I try right now to colonize Mars from its selection panel, I can’t (the selection panel button is disabled: out of colonization range). I presume that’s it’s because of sensor malfunction due to the nebula (it might be a bug; we’ll see). So I’m sending a colony ship toward Mars, to hopefully be able to manually order it to colonize Mars once there.
But why does my ship goes to the route it’s going through? What advantage does it have, in relation to the nebula cloud, to go from the north instead of from the south? It has plenty of fuel (it’s fuel range extend outside of the galaxy map), so it won’t need to refuel on its way, whether it goes from the north or the south (even taking into account that more reactor energy is needed while going through a nebula cloud).
So: why that trajectory?
