I lost Heinz Guderian (killed in action) despite the HQ unit (Panzer army) wasn't attacked by land/air, he wasn't commanding any units that were attacked nor was the unit displaced. No enemy units within about 5-6 hexes. Should this happen or could it be a bug?

aye, its a rare random chance. Think of it as a car accident or plane crash on a routine mission.

Chances are there but should be minimal - I do not know how minimal translates in numbers.

It's depicted in the manual.

I can understand the RNG feels that has screwed one over though, it's like some nifty partisan sniped the prominent leader.

I'm not really complaining since chance accidents and such happened IRL way back from the front and it is the first time I've seen it. Checked the manual but interpreted it as this wouldn't happen. Pity it was Guderian and not some bloke I wanted replaced anyway

we (me and other players) were recently discussing random leader death as Marshal Kulik lost very good leader in exact same way (that leader was many hexes away from any action, probably 30-50)
and it would be nice to have an option in game that will turn on/off such random event

Try to keep your headquarters no closer than 10 hexes from the enemy. Then the chance of accidental death of generals will be minimal. But there is always such a possibility.
