Where and what are the filenames.ext for DUMP DAT FILES?

In Windoze Explorer there's an option to hide file extension that's enabled by default. This is a major security risk and should be disabled by anyone.

As it is provided for public use, I expect that it should not impose any security risk.
What is the risk? May I ask?
