Newbie playing my first game as the Japanese. I have noticed an option called "future objective" for ground units. Does this get me some kind of planning bonus? How long should I wait before taking action?

It allows land combat units to train and prepare for taking an objective. The higher the value the better trained they are. Unfortunately you can only select cities and bases as your target. It's on page 187 of the rules. The rules do much better at explaining than I can.

Planning values also are significant for units defending a particular base if they are relatively high. Of course 100 is the best value. Units gain planning numbers slowly, only 1 or 2 per day.

Another reason to get your planning level up to 100 - when you hit that level the unit will gain Experience a lot faster than when it is working toward it.

And I cannot state that more as with Chinese units (also has effect on morale).

Thanks. I didn't realize that it helped for defense as well.

Good to know. Thanks.

To clarify:
Preparing for an objective only helps an LCU attack that objective in 2 specific circumstances.
(1) The LCU is landing at the base via amphibious landing. The higher prep is, the fewer casualties you'll take in the surf. Japan ignores the penalties for low prep for the duration of its early war amphibious bonus.
(2) The LCU
and an HQ that is in range and is prepping or prepped for the same target is attacking that target. For example, a Division is prepped 100% for Rabaul and you also send an HQ that is 100% prepped. Without an HQ (HQc, HQy, command HQ), you will get no assault value bonus regardless of the unit's prep. However, with the HQ present that is also prepped for Rabaul, you may get some level of bonus to your adjusted assault value in an attack. GetAssista did a thread on this some years ago. From his tests, it appears that you may still get some degree of this bonus even if the unit/HQ do not have 100% prep.
Mostly, I use this for #1 as the allies. I use #2 for the really big bases, but mostly weight of arms does the work anyway.
The real thing that I use it for is organization. I sort my units by prep target in Tracker so that I know where next to send them.

Thanks. I'll remember to keep my HQs close for the assault bonus.
