dots on the map for historical places with names

I have only poked around the map editor, but I'd like to add named dots representing small cities/towns on existing maps for historical reference but no terrain change/defense benefit.
Is that feasible without having to create a .png for each location?

Not sure what you mean, but maybe like these circled ones ?

Exactly like that. I am enjoying your and Larry and Jerry's TGW 1941-1945 and wanted to add places like Yelnya, Bely, Serafimovich, Izyum, Shlisselberg, etc.
Looking at your example, I obviously need to spend more time in the editor as it's already being done.
Thanks.

Its a Graphic File thing. I grabbed all of those that I think apply and added them to this zip. If there is already a folder for your target scenario in the Graphics Override, just add these to it. Otherwise, create a folder and add them. Let me know if you have any troubles, its been years since I did these and I might have missed something.

My bad - I'm thinking graphics in addition to the existing ones. I'm using Best OF Both Worlds Graphics with the Grey Urban package for things like "s_tiles_I_urban.png".
I might try it through using mapOptional8.png. - a star as a historical small town marker.
EDIT - Got it ":#3<8PlaceName"

This was interesting - it only accepts "mapOptional" 1-10 .pngs . I tried creating a "mapOptional11" and nothing happened.
So - I recolored #8 and into Graphics Override it went;

- towns.jpg (1.09 MiB) Viewed 1211 times
now to make it a dot...

This is true, there are only 10 slots for mapOptional's.

I made mapsOptional8 smaller than h_mapsOptional8 so that in the zoom-out the dots were smaller. But the dots are better than stars. Hooray for Graphics Override;

Now to practice the self-restraint of not putting a dot every other hex...
I'll state an interesting thing about the process as I look to place dots on the map; it really starts bringing into clarity the very high correlation of battle sites with places on the map you'd need to control offensively or defensively; whether it's at a rail junction, a rail bridge, or an exposed flank. Which speaks to the quality of the map as well as more fully answering a historical context of "why that place?" that I always have.

Be aware of the Placename limit: 4000. While huge, it is finite.

Me too! And in books also. Its frustrating when a book references places that are not on a map supplied with the book.

Absolutely agree.
I'm reading a book on the Peloponnesian War and the author keeps mentioning places not shown on the maps.
