Playing past 1947

Hi everyone! I was wondering why the game can't be played past 1947? I'm currently in the midst of a rather epic game with a PBEM opponent. The outcome by now does seem clear, but we both like to finish our games to the bitter end. Instead of getting that satisfaction, though, the game is going to end in a couple more turns with Berlin not falling. Why not have it continue for as long as required?

I know that the game isn't designed to last forever, as technological developments get capped out and there isn't a mechanism for multiple atomic bomb drops. But, if the game is still going, and the players still want the game to keep going, why not let it keep going?

Hi

In Options -> Advanced there is an option to disable the end date (near the bottom right) though offhand I'm not sure if you'll be able to activate that option during an ongoing PBEM game. Take a look, and if not I'd recommend using it when starting your next game, just in case it also carries on like this, as it does sound like fun!

For some reason I thought it ended at the end of 1947 even with that option selected. I do believe we did select it, so maybe the war will continue!

It will end in May 1947 unfortunately in your case.

There is a work around for your next game that can work on the server though.
Create a custom game with the option you want enabled/disabled. Name that custom game a unique name.

Send that custom game file to your friend.

After he has downloaded your custom game file, move the file to Documents and use this path:
My Games>World at War>Campaigns, go and host your custom game on the PBEM++ server.

Your custom game will show on the challenge board.
As long as your opponent has the exact version of your custom game, the server will recognize it as compatible and off you go. 🙂

It is January 1948 and the war continues! The Germans will lose this, as I have the Soviets advancing into Poland and Romania, along with another thrust through Turkey that is at the gates of Istanbul. The Americans have forces now in France pressing on the Low Countries and heading toward Italy after taking out Spain, with another force, fresh from victory in the Pacific, heading through Turkey as well to invade through the Balkans. Finally, an Australian and Chinese force is pushing the Italians out of Abyssinia while the Indians head toward the Egypt after pushing through the Middle East.

Like I said, an epic game! I'll have to write an AAR. It was a close one, as the UK had surrendered and the Americans were close to dropping to 0% in National Morale, saved only by forcing the surrender of Japan. But that US morale number is still dangerously low. Not over yet!
