British surrender

Sorry if this has been addressed before.

There was an odd thing that happened in a game I'm playing. The Germans had attempted several invasions of the UK but were unable to make any of them stick. London never fell. But with losses in North Africa and the Middle East, the UK's nationale morale eventually dropped to 0% and the UK surrendered, though there were no German troops in the UK. The Empire kept in the fight, but the UK was out — and the British Isles became German-controlled.

Before this had happened, the Germans had invaded Ireland but had been booted out by the Americans. From there, the US then launched an invasion of the UK and liberated London, and the UK was suddenly back in the fight with 100% morale.

This seems strange to me. It's one thing if the UK had surrendered after London was occupied. But London was never occupied. If the morale dropping to 0% represents the UK losing the will to fight, wouldn't they have pulled out of the war rather than let themselves be occupied by the Germans?

It seems to me that what should have happened here is that the UK would have reverted to a neutral nation, not a surrendered nation. That way, for the Americans to get the UK back into the war they'd have to use diplomatic chits, or just declare war on the neutral British. Instead, Britain got a bit of a reset in morale at the cost of a few naval units that never returned.

Or, when the US liberated London it should have become US-controlled, rather than the capital of a newly-enthusiastic UK. In real terms, the UK went from losing the will to fight and welcoming German occupiers to all-in on the war again within a few months. Seems gamey!

Curious to hear any thoughts. Thanks!

Agree. The effects of national morale should be toned down a little in this game. It creates gamey, ahistorical distortions like you mention. Shifting to a neutral position vice an unconditional surrender makes sense to me. Would also like to see more options to "recover" national morale by retaking objective hexes.

National morale should connected with MPPS the lower morale the lower Mpps, and is not connected
