Are there any mods out there that provide a more nuanced NATO symbology for units such that a symbol for a battalion of light tanks no longer is the same as medium tanks, heavy tanks, assault guns, tank destroyers and monitor tanks? I like to start at the low tech level and at epic tech speed, so a large portion of my games these pieces all look the same.
The game simply is not set up for that, at least not as far as I can tell - I spent many hours upon many hours trying to do just what you ask, but wasn't successful. I even tried over writing non-NATO imagery with NATO symbology, but that failed too due to how the game engine overlays and shifts those images on top of each other for the various weapons and armor types.
So, you're basically limited to a very simple set of symbols to work with and you can't redefine how those symbols are applied to unit types (see answer to your next question).
In the end, the best I could do was this mod which you may have already noticed:

For myself, when playing I ended up using this mod, but in icon mode where the limited NATO symbols show up at the bottom of the counter and not in actual NATO mode.
Alternatively, could someone point me to a guide as to how to assign the symbols? I can make the symbols easy enough but don't know enough about how to get them in the game. Thanks in advance for any help!
The limited NATO symbol set comes from these folders for the big, medium and small scale symbols, respectively:
...\Shadow Empire\Graphics\shadowBIG\nato\
...\Shadow Empire\Graphics\shadow\nato\
...\Shadow Empire\Graphics\shadowSMALL\nato\
This is exactly what the mod I referenced above does.
If you decide to modify those NATO files, it is STRONGLY recommended to copy them to ..\Shadow Empire\GraphicsAlt\... folder as that will leave the original files in place. The game engine will use files in ...\GraphicsAlt\... (if they exist) instead of the originals in ...\Graphics\....
