There are many ways to play Japan on the first turn. But taking Borneo and landing in East NEI is vital.

Okay with turn 1.
Questions turns 2-5:
* Advance towards India?
* What to build?
* China? Seems like a waste?
* Advance further in Pacific?
* Defensive perimeter in Pacific?

India? Yes you have to take Rangoon, the oil field over there and Ledo...
You should get to the Indian border at worst case...best case it could be trouble for the Allies.
China? I hit them hard and that is where I send the bulk of my force. If you can push them deep into their own country you can take multiple victory points and cripple them enough that you can pull troops out in 43 / 44 to reinforce all your holdings.
Pacific? The battle will likely be in the Solomons...if the Allies can hold a few islands it will be grind that always works in the favor of the side with more resources. Japan just needs to keep the US busy there while they beat down on China and push towards the India border.
Defense? Does not matter on turns 2-5...honestly does not really matter too much until the end of 42...the Allies should not be pushing deep into Japanese held areas unless they want to lose units.
What to build is really up to you...early a few armies...could build some subs to try to control the Allies moving of resources...could use some fighters for support vs the US air force that is coming...there are SO many options which depend on how well you did in the Solomons, China and India.

And also, China has few cities with 10 PP. Bring these PP to Japanese production is important to build new units and upgrade, repair the existing ones.
Look at my current AAR vs YueJin. See how he push me in China. He basically gain a year because with the end state of the Chinese army, it took me a year to recover. And during this time, he has put his best armies in India imo.

I looked at your AAR but had to dig through to get gist of Axis approach in China. Can you summarize?

The best to summarize is the Axis player. Basically, Japan has followed the rails to cut my supply in South China. I was obliged to withdraw due to supply issues.
