After many years of playing EIA on my old Win7 desktop, I finally broke down and bought a new gaming laptop.

This new machine is a Win10 laptop with no internal optical drive. I've purchased an external optical drive with a USB connection, and I still have my original EIA installation CD, from over a dozen years ago.

The game will not install from the external optical drive, but I've had this problem with other games I've "migrated" from my old desktop, and with them I've just copied the contents of the install CD to my laptop's hard drive and installed from there.

When I tried this with EIA by first copying the contents of the EIA install CD to a folder on my new laptop, then running the installation "EmpireinArms-SetupRelease-DRv1.exe" file (right click on the filename & choose "run as administrator" from the options list), the installation starts normally, asks me for my name, serial # (printed on the CD) and desired install folder (chose the default), starts transferring files, then hangs up partway through the process. It creates the game's folder and fills it with subfolders and files, then just stops before actually installing the game or creating the desktop shortcut.

Any suggestions on how to get past this?

You should still have your registration number or can get it from Matrix. There is a new v1.23.08 installer available at downloads. I recommend using that and then updating to the v1.24 betas. The v1.24.02 Beta is pretty solid. I'm working on v1.24.03 to wrap up a few more improvements going into a new official patch. Hopefully not to much longer.

After I posted, I saw another post from someone who had the same problem. I used his method, namely installing in safe mode, and it worked, so I'm all set now.

just installed the latest download...when I start a game and begin play, I dont see any "buttons" up top.
Is this a patch issue ? Thought I had the latest and greatest loaded...
appreciate any insight

Usually a bad install. I recommend uninstalling what you have, reboot, and then install fresh and run as Admin when you do. Maybe even in Safe Mode with a laptop. And prior to running the game, set program compatibility to Win XP SP2. I go through this myself, recently a couple months ago when I upgraded to a Win11 PC. When you don't see any buttons or all of the buttons up top, then something's not right and you need to reinstall. Good luck.
