Disbanding units and experience/morale values

If you disband a unit and the elements have experience/morale values that are above the starting unit norm for your nationality, do those elements retain that experience when they are incorporated into a new unit through the replacement process? Or are they treated the same as new recruits?

AFAIK, nothing is retained. The manpower just goes to the pool. When another unit draws manpower from the pool the elements coming in adjust to the morale/exp levels of the unit they are joining. New replacements will drop the values down however. I think only using the "merge" option you can retain morale/exp of these units.

This is my understanding as well

all gone, better try to merge to conserve that exp/morale

Best would be that things do not auto-disband but a player discretionally disband things depending on the needs.

Especially as many disbands are historically scheduled because 'historically' some unit was simply too mauled or so - and there were no preconditions for a reconstitution.

I guess this is why disbanding doesn't cost AP while merging does. Another thing for the Soviets to spend AP on and another reason not to cut the Soviet AP allotment.

The question is why would you ever merge as either side except for teleporting <x> amounts of manpower and equipment into the production pools? I'm not an expert on the combat simulation, but won't 2 understrength divisions perform about as well as merging the 2 into 1?

Because you are very often forced to do so. This is especially the case for late war German formations. And no: two understrength divisions will not perform as well as a normal division that was formed from merging the 2. Throwing understrength divisions in combat will ensure that you take massive losses that you cannot replace easily. It might even lead to both of them routing or potentially shattering too. While a division that is say at 60% TOE (combined from two divisions both at 30% TOE) would perform better.

Once a unit reaches the unready state (%TOE+morale<90), the unit suffers penalties in combat and is very easily beaten badly. The other issue is if a weak unit takes a lot of losses and falls below 10% of TOE, it will go depleted and will be more susceptible to routing or shattering.
