Sub Sunk by Torpedo?

I know subs were sunk by torpedos from other subs in real life but I have not seen it done in UV in 7 months of play.

However a few turns ago I lost a sub to a torpedo from a Japanese APD (Assumption on my part because of type 92 torpedo), I did not notice the hit during play (just missed it i guess) but when I checked the Sunk Ships screen a few turns later I was greated with this surprise (Attached).

Has anyone every seen a sub sunk by a sub torpedo in UV?

Yes, I lost a sub (torpedoed) in a failed night surface attack to an IJN cruiser.
Torpedoed by a cruiser, how ironic.

I had the strange occurance of a sub actually sinking itself. Can't remember the exact details but the combat report read sub firing torpedo at AP and sub sunk by torpedo. Wish I had saved that combat file.

Subs sunk by their own torpedoes happen several times during WWII. Without my references at hand, the only examples I can give is the USS Tang, 24 or 25/Oct/1944, and USS Tullibee, ?. In both cases they were survivors to give the cause of the loss. As many subs were lost without any survivors, it is possible that others may have fallen to their own weapons.

Another cause of damage or loss to subs was the explosion of their target, when it was a merchant ship loaded with ammunitions. At least one U-Boote was confirmed sunk like that and others subs (German, French, USN) damaged but survived.

I would never have tought that this was possible in UV.

SUNK BY A TRAIN!!!!
In WWI a UBoat torpedoed a freighter loaded with explosives and railroad locomotives. The freighter blew up and one of the locomotives flew sky high and came down on the unfortunate UBoat sinking it.  :D

For those who care, I shall endeavor to find the source about the train that sank the sub. Unfortunately I am indisposed (at work). I believe I read about the incident in either Strategy & Tactics or Command Magazine quite some years back. I have a large mixed stack the two at home which I shall search through. More later.:)

"Deep Sea Detectives" on the History Channel tonight 7/8/03 at 8pm EST... the subject is the use and failure of us torpedoes during WWII.

Who fired it? Gruber? I bet it was Gruber. That guy was always up to no good!

That's funny...

While I have no specific references, the Gremans had major problems with their magnetic torpedoes for the first two year of the war. Remember reading this in 'Hitlers U-boat War' - by the same guy who wrote a similar book for the pacific sub war. Evidently there was a real danger of the torpedoes circling back and hitting their own subs.

MY MISTAKE

The submarine I mentioned in a previous reply to this thread was sunk by a TRUCK, not a train.

U28, shelled the SS Olive in order to conserve torpedoes. The SS Olive was carrying explosives and a deck cargo of trucks. When the explosives blew up a truck was tossed into the air and struck the U28. U28 sank with all hands.

I read about this incident in S&T #82 more than 20 years ago so I hope you all can forgive a senile old man. ;)

punching out myriad numbers of die-cut markers, trying to keep them straight (remember Squad Leader), looking for my wifes sewing kit containers (or worse, those plastic cartons my Dad put his fishing tackle in), and then taking hours to get the board set up (waiting for the Hand of God - or Paw of Cat - to take a part in the events. What a wonderful time.

Can anything match getting a USN 44 across the stern of a RN 74 with a double shotted range 1 stern rake?
