Ambush getting better results that regular attacks?

I began to notice that, in the beginning, deliberately triggering an ambush Brigade vs Brigade as the Union usually ends in a 2:2 - is this intentional? So getting ambushed actually favors the Union?!
You can not get these odds with prepared attacks.

I gotta say I was noticing something similar, where ambushed brigades seemed to be overperforming in the brigade vs. brigade fights.

It's fine. Ambushes with those early brigades are less a "true" ambush and more both armies sort of blundering into each other and then feeling compelled to fight it out, rather than just skirmishing for a bit and retreating.

Risky strategy though... it doesn't take long for divisions to show up and when they do, ambushes become much more dangerous!

Yup…. It’s called a meeting engagement. The upper hand goes to the force that conducted a movement to contact.
