Not fishing or anything, but bought game when first released and over the next few years tried playing multiplayer with a friend a few times, however fraustration from constant crashing we gave up on it. So havent had it on my PC or tried it for close to 3-4 years and was thinking of reinstalling and updating it, Just reluctant to go through all that if the multiplayer is still unstable

Not sure, what "multiplayer" relates to, but MWIF can be played by pbem with 2-6 players, as you can see by yourself, if you check the AAR section. I recommend the 6-Player Friendly PBEM Global War AAR

It's not finished. If you want to play NP the game is ok 99% of the time, but that is not enough in a game which can take 200+ hours of your time, you will have problems that you will have to sort (like resigning yourself that the convoys system is fuck*d up, or you cannot go forward withot losing two ships you have captured, or one of your units is permanently OOS, ...).
Sometimes you need to edit the game saves with the help of some forum members who know computing, and pray it will work and will not corrupt the game. Like when the game deleted like 7 of my about 15 oils as a GE player, a catastrophe.
Some bugs are game stopping.
And unfortunately all the attention is now with the new AI ( cash matters

) so bugs are not solved from months ago. You can see it in the developer post. Of course there are his holidays, but I am not talking of 1 or 2 months...

Netplay is "multi" if you mean 2 players. I suppose you might be able to add more with screen + mouse sharing software.
I sense from the posts lately that a number of people are having far greater success playing with two or more others by emailing game saves of sessions begun in solitaire mode. Using head-to-head mode doesn't really add anything and possibly makes things worse. The downside is US Entry is not made invisible to the Axis (either way really).
For large air/naval battles and some complex land attacks (ie. air and HQ support decisions), some folks are using screen sharing, some are using instant messaging, some both.

Thanks...I get the feeling it is still really awkward and not a easy and stable way to play a multiplayer game. Was really hoping it might be a click and connect and everything works after all this time.

I strongly disagree. It does add agility, since the answer to the thousand intereactions the game asks both the active and the inactive player all the time.
Plus that is another modaluty with even it's own name, not NetPlay.
As for the Multiplayer, NOW it is 2 players, in the original design and developement list it was for more players as well, although it is low in the list so no hope to see it in maybe 10 years. But originally (and theoretically in the future too) multiplayer is not supposed to be only two. Maybe it should be discarded from the to-do list...

NO, it wont but, hey, maybe you'll have an AI someday to play against ,even though the game stalls here and there...

I don't know what you are disagreeing with. I meant H2H does not add value for playing by emailing moves and/or screen sharing, which is what this topic is about. Players don't really need to bother dismissing an extra dialog box that tells them it's their turn to act, when they just got the move as an attachment addressed to them. And I've seen occasions where the dialog is wrong anyway. The US entry is still available to the Axis by progressing the game at the right point, if they so desire.
Yes, H2H is a separate mode. It was made for two players to play the game by taking turns on the same computer. If you are going to play by email and/or screen sharing, Solitaire mode has the least issues.

I think Paul means "Using head-to-head mode doesn't really add anything and possibly makes things worse, compared to solitary mode when playing by sending gamesaves by email + screensharing".
Which I completelly agree. It just hides US entry form.

And I read it as Joseignacio was agreeing with Paul, and wanted to emphasize the quoted part.

Holy Sh*t.
I think it is my fault. I didnt know (or forgot) that there is a H2H independent mode (is that Hotseat?) so I thought you were referring to NetPlay (in other words) and I was praising - bugs apart

-
the swiftness of NetPlay.
