It seems that a surface TF moves double normal distance if the destination hex is it's home port.

This must be a bug.

Nope - all TFs move at sprint speed if tehy can get to home base in that sprint. THis is not restricted to Surface TFs!!

Playing as allies I've been able to send surface taskforces of CA's DD's etc from Cairns to Port Moresby in one turn, if I set their home base to Port Moresby.
Surely this is a bug.

I haven't noticed this phenomenon with CV taskforces.

No, this still works. There are two movement phases in the turn, the first one is taken at cruise speed, this puts you in range of a sprint into PM - so you sprint :)
In a bombardment mission this doesn't work as the TF wants to "sprint" in and "sprint" out, so it stops its previous turn 1 sprint move from the target.

I was playing a pbem game as Japan. My CV TF was just to the West of Lunga about 4 hexes. the USN CV TF was 7 hexes south of me( perfect positioning). After the battle, I pursued. I moved as far South as I could. I detected the USN TF( with one CV in it) just to the West of Kourmac. This is a huge movement!! There was no returning to port in this one.
