Thsi isnt even mentioned in the manual as an option, at least I couldnt find it. Anyway, I assume its a way to gain experience through training. What I wonder is if they then also help with construction, or do they need to be in another mode to do that, like Comabt mode?

Page 186, but the layout makes it look like a part of the "Reserve" section:
"Rest - Movement speed and combat strength are reduced compared to other OpModes. The recovery of Fatigue, Disruption, and Morale is increased compared to other OpModes."
LCUs will only start training after achieving 100 prep points, regardless of the Op Mode.
Units need to be in combat mode in order to help with construction.

Rest mode means that they do nothing but use supplies and gain preparation for the target. Once preparation is 100%, then experience may increase but only up to the national maximum for training. If you want it higher, then use combat against the enemy. If you want work done, then use combat mode.

1. Fantastic picture
2. So to gain experience training I have to plan where they are to be next, wait for it to get to 100 and then they might get experience through trainging ut to a certain value? Sounds very complicated, are people really using this in the game?

It also means there is no reason to set units to Rest/training until they get to 100?

Yes, it actually is not hard.
When a unit comes in, decide what target you want it to prepare for since they usually come in with no preparation. Then, don't change it until you have the unit at the maximum experience for that nationality. Also, I tend not to let them have too many replacements until the unit has trained. But replacements are an entirely different topic to achieve the maximum benefit from them.

Objectives don't have to be offensive they can also be defensive in nature.

As most things it depence on a number of factors. A number of units that starts with both low exp and low moral. The fastest way to get the moral up is doing rest with a good leader. Some places like in malaria zone it will be the only way less in large bases to gain moral. As having the constand disruption and fatigue will hinder the moral gains. So its one of those cases with no answer fits all. If you in the malaria zone and want for example base units to build u cant have them in rest. Where as you can have a low moral-low exp divsion not in the frontline you want to get up in both moral and exp. Then there is until moral gets as high as u want it, plenty a reason to have them in rest even if they arent at prep 100 and cant gain exp from training yet.
Hope it helps,
Rasmus

All this is very helpful, its also very interesting in that when you think you have a basic understanding of the game things like this comes and it turns out that beneath the surface is one more level of things to understand to play the game

Get the largest and strongest onion that you can find, start peeling away layers until you get to the core. Then realize that onion only represented a small part of the game and the tears are because you did not understand it that well and you realize how you could have done it better. But the last tears are tears of joy because you finally get to the heart of that subject.
It you want good information on any subject, although some of the information may be dated because of updates to the game, when you search include "+ Alfred" in your search. He will give parts of the manual, links to threads from the developers, or both.

This part about training ground units is also found on page 187 of the manual in section 8.2.1.4 objectives. I add the important part including the maximum training for each Nationality.

Thus, it is very beneficial not to change preparation target when dealing with low exp units (Chinese especially).

Only if they are not on zero when they enter or at game start.
